JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy’s son Nikhil loses in Ramanagaram

JD(S) leader and former Karnataka chief minister HD Kumaraswamy’s son Nilkil on Saturday faced defeat in the party bastion of Ramanagaram, losing the seat to the Congress by 10,715 votes.

Anitha Kumaraswamy, the wife of H D Kumaraswamy, is the outgoing MLA of the  Ramanagaram segment. Nearly three decades after Ramanagaram propelled H D Deve Gowda to the post of chief minister, his grandson Nikhil Kumaraswamy tested the waters here following his disastrous electoral debut in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.

He had lost to BJP-backed Independent candidate Sumalatha Ambareesh in the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency by 1,25,876 votes.

Have won in 15 of 20 seats Bharat Jodo Yatra traversed, says Congress

The Congress on Saturday hailed the Bharat Jodo Yatra for the party’s success in the Karnataka assembly polls, having won 15 of the 20 assembly constituencies in the state the Rahul Gandhi-led foot march passed through. The opposition party also asserted that in the clash of narratives between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the yatra, the cross-country march emerged a “clear winner”.

The Congress is headed for a big win in Karnataka having already registered victories in 126 seats while leading in 10 more in the elections to the 224-member assembly. Party general secretary Jairam Ramesh, considered the brains behind the Bharat Jodo Yatra’s execution besides Digvijaya Singh, tweeted an interesting aspect of the party’s stellar performance in the Karnataka polls.

Karnataka results present picture of 2024 Lok Sabha elections: Sharad Pawar

As the counting trends put the Congress firmly on course to come to power in Karnataka, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief and former Maharashtra chief minister Sharad Pawar on Saturday claimed that the results “present a picture” of next year’s Lok Sabha elections.

Slamming the Bharatiya Janata Party, Pawar claimed that the people have given a “strong verdict” against the party.

“Success and failure can be understood. But the role of defeating the BJP in Karnataka was taken up by the people there. I congratulate the people of Karnataka and the Congress. They have taught BJP a lesson.

Now this process will be done across the country,” Sharad Pawar said.

Congress crosses 113-seat majority mark required to form govt in Karnataka

The Congress crossed the 113-seat mark in the Assembly elections, the majority required to form the government, in Karnataka for which counting of votes took place on Saturday.

According to the Election Commission website, the party won 122 seats and was leading in 14 constituencies. On the other hand, the BJP won 56 seats and was ahead in eight segments. The JD(S) emerged victorious in 18 seats and was leading in two constituencies. Two independents, one candidate each from ‘Kalyana Rajya Pragathi Paksha’ and ‘Sarvodaya Karnataka Paksha’ won.

Elections to the 224-member Assembly took place on Wednesday.

The strength of the poor has defeated the power of crony capitalists and this will happen in all states, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said on Saturday, stressing that his party raised people’s issues and ran a positive campaign.

The Congress successfully wresting power in Karnataka after Himachal Pradesh will be a morale booster for the party in reviving its electoral fortunes and strengthening its credentials as the main opposition player against the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Outgoing CM Bommai wins from Shiggoan for 4th time in row

Outgoing Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday registered his fourth consecutive victory from the Shiggoan constituency in Haveri district, defeating his nearest rival Yasir Ahmed Khan Pathan of the Congress by a margin of 35,341 votes.

The BJP leader bagged 99,073 votes against 63,732 polled by Pathan. JD(S)’s Shashidhar Yeligar was in third place with 13,794 votes.

  63-year-old Bommai, who is the son of former Karnataka chief minister and Janata Parivar veteran late S R Bommai, had in the 2018 Assembly polls defeated the Congress’ Sayed Azeempeer Khadri by a margin of 9,265 votes.

Siddaramaiah wins from Varuna constituency, becomes MLA for 9th time

Senior Congress leader and former chief minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday got a landslide victory in the Varuna constituency, defeating his nearest rival by a margin of 46,006 votes and entering the Karnataka Assembly for the ninth time.

The 75-year-old leader got 1,19,430 votes against 73,424 polled by his BJP rival and influential Lingayat leader V Somanna. The Bahujan Samaj Party candidate was in third place with 1,075 votes, according to the Election Commission website.

Siddaramaiah top contender for CM post in Karnataka

The 75-year-old Congress leader Siddaramaiah’s stride appeared to have been injected with newfound vitality as he went to address a crowded news conference in Mysore on Saturday.

Nearly four hours into the counting of votes for the Karnataka assembly election, the Janata Dal (Secular), which was being touted as a possible kingmaker in the event of a hung verdict, ahead of the results, now appears to have taken a big hit in its vote share and it may turn out that the regional party manages to secure fewer seats than its 2018 count.

But, these are early trends and the scenario could well turn out to be a different one once the results are declared with the JD(S) score making a turnaround.
