The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a red alert for heavy rain in Mumbai, prompting the closure of schools across the city as severe waterlogging affected several areas.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced a holiday for all schools, including afternoon shift institutions, due to the downpour, according to a BMC PRO.

Amid the red alert, the BMC urged residents to exercise caution and avoid stepping out unnecessarily. In a post on X, the civic body said, “Citizens are hereby advised to avoid stepping out unless absolutely necessary and to strictly adhere to instructions issued by the authorities.”

The red alert, the highest in the IMD’s four-tier warning system, was in effect on Monday for Borivali, Thane, Kalyan, Mulund, Powai, Santa Cruz, Chembur, Worli, Navi Mumbai, and Colaba. Waterlogging in these areas continued to disrupt traffic and daily activities.

Other parts of Maharashtra were placed under yellow and orange alerts for the day.

The IMD forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall, exceeding 15 mm per hour, along with overcast skies, thunderstorms, and gusty winds in Mumbai. The intensity of rain had decreased on Sunday morning, with only light showers and occasional heavy spells reported, and no major waterlogging observed.
