The state of New York was one of the 13 original colonies that joined the union back in 1788. However, the state was not able to participate in the country's first election due to some internal disputes. Interestingly, in the 1810 census, it became New York became the most populous state in the United States. The state carried most electoral voters from the 1812 election until the 1972 election, until it relinquished its throne to the state of California. The state has remained a stronghold for Democrats over the years. In this election, the state will have 28 electoral votes, due to the redrawing of lines based on the recent status. In 2020, when it elected the current US President Joe Biden against former US President Donald Trump, it held 29 electorates.
