New Hampshire is a state in the northeastern United States. It is one of the 13 original British colonies that declared independence to form the United States of America. It has four electoral votes in the presidential election. New Hampshire was named after the British city of Hampshire by British colonial settlers in the United States in the pre-independence era. Due to its history of granite mining, the state has the nickname of the 'Granite State'. New Hampshire is often seen as a state of contradictions. For over 150 years, the state has been among the most industrialised in the United States, but it has regularly been portrayed as agricultural and pastoral. It is also seen among the most pro-business states and firmly conservative and yet it was among the first states to legalise the same-sex unions and business tax remains the highest source of the revenue, according to the Britannica Encyclopaedia.
