Kentucky, officially the Commonwealth of Kentucky, is a landlocked state located in the Southeastern region of the United States. It shares borders with Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio to the north; West Virginia to the northeast; Virginia to the east; Tennessee to the south; and Missouri to the west, with the Ohio River defining its northern boundary. The capital is Frankfort, while the largest city is Louisville.
As of 2020, Kentucky's population was approximately 4.5 million. Originally part of Virginia, Kentucky became the fifteenth state to join the Union on June 1, 1792. It is commonly known as the "Bluegrass State," named after Kentucky bluegrass, which supports the state's renowned thoroughbred horse industry.
