About District of Columbia

3 Electoral VotesSafe Democratic
The District of Columbia holds a unique place in US presidential elections. It is the only non-state constituency to have got a franchise for presidential elections. It got the electoral votes in 1961 through the 23rd Amendment that gave residents of the US capital electoral votes. But their electoral votes can't exceed the number of the least populous state. So, the DC has had three electoral votes in a US presidential election since 1964. It is a safe Democratic constituency. No Republican has ever won an electoral vote from the DC. In the 2020, Democrat nominee Joe Biden overwhelmed Republican Donald Trump, securing 17 votes for each going to his rival.
