Kansas is a state located in the Midwestern region of the United States, bordered by Nebraska to the north, Missouri to the east, Oklahoma to the south, and Colorado to the west. Named after the Kansas River, which is derived from the Kansa people, the state has Topeka as its capital and Wichita as its most populous city. The largest urban area is the bi-state Kansas City, MO-KS metropolitan area. Covering 82,278 square miles, Kansas is the 15th-largest state by area and the 36th most populous, with a population of 2,940,865 according to the 2020 census. It is also the 10th least densely populated state. Residents are known as Kansans, and the highest point is Mount Sunflower at 4,039 feet.
