Montana is located in the Mountain West region of the Western United States. It shares its borders with Idaho to the west, North Dakota to the east, South Dakota to the southeast, Wyoming to the south, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan to the north. As the fourth-largest state by area, Montana ranks as the eighth least populous and the third least densely populated state. Helena serves as its capital, while Billings is the most populous city. The western half of the state is home to numerous mountain ranges, while the eastern half features western prairie terrain and badlands, interspersed with smaller mountain ranges. Montana came under American sovereignty following the Louisiana Purchase from France in 1803. The discovery of gold in 1852 sparked a gold rush that, alongside the Homestead Acts of 1862, attracted many American settlers to the region.
