Arkansas is a landlocked American state in what is referred to as the West South Central region of the United States. It has a speculative history as the native Indian chiefdoms did not leave written accounts of their rule, society, economy or battles. Documented history of Arkansas practically begins with the arrival of Europeans - the French and the Spanish - in the 16th-17th century.
Getting its name from the language spoken by one of the native Indian communities - the Osage, who are believed to have competed with Quapaw and Caddo for dominance in the region for centuries. Passing through several deals and purchases, Arkansas joined the American Union in 1836 but seceded during the Civil War, staying from the 1864 US election.
Arkansas has been a politically active state - sometimes lamented by commentators that "it has too much politics". Arkansas has six electoral votes in the US presidential election.
