With India knocked out of the World T20 earlier than expected and their dismal performance in Test series in the past year, MS Dhoni’s captaincy has come under some scrutiny.
And as cricket expert Ayaz Memon puts it, the team hasn’t been “great shakes” in ODIs too.
So, does that mean there will be a leadership change in the team?
“There should be a discussion and according to my BCCI sources, there will be a discussion over Dhoni’s captaincy and it is now high priority. It may just be an academic discussion, but it’s playing on the minds of the board and the selectors. Not to necessarily belittle him, but to see whether he needs to be skipper in all three formats. If there is a change, Virat Kohli should be captain in T20.”
The trend in most countries is that there are different captains in different formats and India may choose this path. But will it be fair to blame India’s failures solely on Dhoni?
“That would be unkind,” says Ayaz before adding, “look at South Africa. They’re probably the best team and have lost all three matches. Even the defending T20 champions are out. The T20 format is very topsy-turvy and it would be wrong to assess only on that. But even in other formats, India have had a bad year.”
Ayaz also believes the reson Virat Kohli should be the man to replace Dhoni as T20 captain is so that a young team can be built around him.
