Fourteen years ago on this day, the greatest batsman to ever play the game, Sachin Tendulkar, etched his name in the history books when he became the first male cricketer to slam a double century in a One Day International (ODI) match. February 24 from 2013 will also be remembered for MS Dhoni as he became first and only Indian wicketkeeper-batter to score a double hundred, surpassing Budhi Kunderan’s knock of 192 against England in 1964. Dhoni achieved this incredible feat against Australia in Chennai in 2013. The World Cup-winning India skipper had produced a remarkable knock of 224 in that Test against the Aussies.

Coming back to Tendulkar, his historic feat took place at the Captain Roop Singh Stadium in Gwalior, where the Master Blaster elegantly played a full ball outside off towards point and sprinted to complete his 200th run. Upon completing the run, commentator Ravi Shastri exclaimed, “The first man on the planet to reach 200 and it’s the superman from India – Sachin Tendulkar, 200 from 147. Take a bow, master.” Tendulkar’s milestone remained unmatched by any other male cricketer at the time. Australian cricketer Belinda Clark achieved a similar feat in a women’s World Cup match against Denmark in 1997.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also marked the feat by sharing a post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. “On this day in 2010 the legendary Sachin Tendulkar created history by becoming the first batter to score an ODI double hundred in men’s cricket,” read the post shared by BCCI.

During this historic innings, Tendulkar was in his element as he dominated with 25 fours and three sixes, remaining unbeaten throughout the match as India raced to 401 losing three wickets. MS Dhoni was at his smashing best in the final few overs and provided great support to Tendulkar.
Upon reaching the milestone, Sachin raised his arms triumphantly. He was one of the finest batsmen of all time, and he became the first player to breach the 200-run milestone in the 50-over format.
In response, South Africa were bowled out for 248 runs. Nearly 30,000 fans witnessed Tendulkar’s historical performance in the second ODI of the series against South Africa. Expressing his gratitude, Tendulkar dedicated his remarkable innings to the people of India.
“I would like to dedicate this double hundred to the people of India who have stood by me no matter what for the last 20 years,” Tendulkar, who was the player of the match, said at the presentation ceremony.
This historic moment contributed to India’s dominance in international ODI cricket - currently, seven out of ten double centuries in men’s cricket have been notched up by Indian batters.
