Kerala minister unfurls flag upside down, BJP demands resignation

A Kerala minister hoisted the National Flag upside down in this district, during the Republic Day celebrations on Wednesday, triggering a political controversy as the opposition BJP demanded his resignation for showing disrespect to the tricolour.

The incident occurred when minister Ahamed Devarkovil, who holds the Port and Archaeology portfolios in the Left Government, unfurled the flag at the Municipal Stadium here this morning. A nominee of the Indian National League (INL), an ally of the CPI(M)-led LDF, Devarkovil was the chief guest of the Republic Day celebrations at the district headquarters.

Interestingly, no one, including the minister, peoples’ representatives, police officials and other dignitaries present on the occasion, notice the gaffe After the flag hoisting, the minister saluted it and proceeded with his speech, amidst which some media personnel who gathered there to cover the event pointed out the error.

Then the minister soon came back, lowered the flag and hoisted it again correctly. Meanwhile, BJP state chief K Surendran sought the immediate resignation of Devarkovil and a police case be registered against him and the officials concerned who showed disrespect to the National Flag.

“It is a matter of serious concern that the minister also saluted the tricolour after it was hoisted upside down. It is ridiculous that despite such a grave mistake, neither the minister nor the officials realised the error,” he said in a statement.

Indians abroad celebrate, greetings pour in from world leaders

The Indian diaspora on Wednesday celebrated the 73rd Republic Day amid COVID-19 restrictions, as several world leaders, including Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, extended their greetings on the occasion, highlighting their strong friendship with India.

In Singapore, the Indian High Commission virtually celebrated the Republic Day. Acting High Commissioner Siddhartha Nath read the president’s message to the Indian community through social media. Performance of students from Indian schools in Singapore was also shared through social media.

In his message on Twitter, Australian Prime Minister Morrison extended his greetings, also in Hindi, to his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.

Cap from Uttarakhand, stole from Manipur, a look at PM Modi’s parade attire

On the occasion of Republic Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi chose to wear a headgear — a tradition he started since he took office in 2014 and has continued for all Republic Day and Independence Day events.

He wore a cap from Uttarakhand, perhaps, in a nod to the Assembly elections in the state — scheduled for 14 February. His cap also featured a ‘Brahmakamal’, which is interestingly the state flower of the hill state.

In addition to his headgear, Modi also draped a stole around his neck. The stole comes from Manipur. The white, black and red woven cloth is a leitmotif of the Meitei tribe in Manipur.
