Inspired by the Kevin Costner “Field of Dreams” movie, a baseball programme is giving children from a slum in one of the Philippines’ biggest garbage dumps a chance to rise out of poverty. Inspired by a Hollywood film about a farmer who builds a baseball diamond on his cornfield, this one gives children from the slums an alternative to the lure of drugs and gangs.
It’s been a huge success, with 15 players going on to baseball teams with prestigious universities in the capital. A government agency let the team use the lot for free, and corporate sponsors including US firms operating in the Philippines cleared the field and provided uniforms and playing equipment.
