General profile
Virginia, known as the “Old Dominion,” has a rich historical significance and diverse geography, ranging from coastal regions to mountainous areas. It is home to numerous historical landmarks and has a mix of urban and rural populations.
Voter demographics
Virginia’s electorate comprises a diverse population, including significant Black, White and Asian communities. According to recent estimates, about 20 per cent of the state’s population identifies as Black or African American, while around 10 per cent identifies as Hispanic or Latino. The Asian population makes up about 7 per cent of the state’s demographics, reflecting a growing immigrant community, especially in Northern Virginia.
Voting trends
Historically, Virginia was a stronghold for the Democratic Party, particularly in the mid-20th century. However, it has seen a shift in recent years. In presidential elections, Virginia voted Democratic in the last three elections (2008, 2012, 2016 and 2020), marking it as a likely blue state. Notably, in the 2020 election, Joe Biden won Virginia by a margin of 10.1 per cent, achieving the best performance for a Democratic candidate since Franklin D Roosevelt.
Swing state status
Virginia is often considered a swing state, primarily due to its changing demographics and political landscape. The growing population in Northern Virginia, coupled with a decline in traditional Republican strongholds in the rural areas, has made it a competitive battleground. The state’s strategic importance in the presidential elections is underscored by its 13 electoral votes, which can significantly impact the overall outcome.
Historical significance
Virginia has a notable place in US presidential history, having produced eight US presidents, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. This historical legacy adds to its political relevance.
Memorable elections
One of the most memorable elections in Virginia’s recent history was the 2008 presidential election, where Barack Obama became the first Democratic presidential nominee to win Virginia since 1964. His victory marked a significant shift in the state’s political alignment and was seen as a bellwether for the Democratic resurgence in the region.
