Seagate Launches Enterprise-Class Pulsar XT.2 SSDs

Seagate’s dominance, like with most other hard drive manufacturers, seems to be threatened by the introduction of versatile solid state drives. Many of the manufacturers have started manufacturing solid state drivers to stay in the game. Seagate has launched their newest enterprise-class solid state drive called the Pulsar XT.2 in the market. The Pulsar XT.2 is based on MLC (multi-level cell) Flash memory. It uses the SATA3 interface and is available in capacities up to 400GB. The Pulsar XT.2 isn’t designed for home use, but for more high-workload environments such as databases for e-mail, web site indexing servers.

The other drive, the Pulsar.2 that is being launched is also an enterprise-class drive based on MLC Flash memory. The drive is available in capacities reaching 800GB. Both the drivers have been designed keeping data integrity, endurance and high performance in mind. In such specialized workplaces drives undergo several hundreds of read and write processes. The first of the Seagate drives should hit channels by the 29th of July, 2011. The fact that large manufacturers such as Seagate are going full speed ahead with SSDs and organizations adopting SSDs as storage solutions for high-priority data suggests that SSDs have, in fact matured and are ready for mass consumption.
