Facebook lashes back at employers seeking employee FB passwords

Facebook has become a closer part of everyone’s lives, and everywhere in the world, people use it to keep in touch with family and friends. Recently, a rather disturbing trend was brought to light, when it was discovered that employers sought their employees’ Facebook details (read: login details). Sure, there’s bound to be some misuse by using Facebook excessively during work hours, but asking for login details is probably not the best way to do it. Facebook is understandably not pleased with this policy, and they have come out strongly against this, by officially putting up a notice raising concern over this issue. It states that no user at any point in time should have to share their personal Facebook details or logins with their employers. Employers shouldn’t be asking possible future employees to share their Facebook logins and passwords with them, just so that they can get a job, either. Facebook has stated that sharing a password, is in fact, a violation of their State of Rights and Responsibilities. 

Fighting for your rights and privacy

Letting employers in on your personal information from Facebook is a bad idea. Facebook claims that companies may not be equipped to handle and maintain privacy of their employees’ personal information. Facebook has assured their users that they are offering the tools that let them see who’s been viewing their content. It’s also assured its users that it would do everything possible, such as speaking with policy makers to take legal action against companies and applications that violate these rules. It’s also the employers who might get into trouble sometime down the line. 

Such incidents of employees asking for details are unheard of in India. Facebook, like other social networking sites are an issue in offices, but administration usually decides to block access to them. This outrage by Facebook is likely to be an outcome of the news of employers asking future employees to share their Facebook passwords so a background check of sorts could be done on them before they were employed.
