Fwire •Chandigarh, Oct 12 (IANS) The Punjab government will distribute over 1.52 lakh free bicycles to girls studying in Classes 11 and 12, a minister said Saturday. The distribution of cycles will begin at a function at Jagraon town Oct 25, Revenue Minister Bikram Singh Majithia said. He said 152,330 girls in government schools will be given the bicycles under the Mai Bhago Vidya scheme.
500 troops deployed in coastal Andhra
Fwire •Hyderabad, Oct 12 (IANS) At least 500 armymen were deployed Saturday in north coastal Andhra Pradesh for rescue and relief operations in view of cyclonic storm Phailin expected to make landfall later this evening. The troops were moved to the coastal districts of Srikakulam and Vishakhapatnam to assist the authorities in relief, rescue and evacuation operations, said a statement. The troops are equipped with mechanical boats, life jackets and life saving medicines.

US ship detained by Venezuela in Guyana
Fwire •Georgetown, Oct 12 (IANS) Guyana has said that the Venezuelan Navy entered its territorial waters and detained a US-operated ship. The Venezuelan actions in the disputed Essequibo region constituted "a serious threat to peace in the region", Guyana said, adding that the ship belongs to Texas-based company Anadarko, which has been granted a contract to look for oil in the area, BBC reported. Venezuela, however, said the ship was operating illegally in Venezuelan waters.
