IPL 2017: Glenn Maxwell replaces Murali Vijay as Kings XI Punjab captain
Kings XI chose Maxwell over the likes of Eoin Morgan, who captained England to the 2016 World T20 final, and Darren Sammy, who led the West Indies to two World T20 titles.
New Delhi: Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell on Friday replaced Indian batsman Murali Vijay as Kings XI Punjab captain ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL), beginning April 5. The IPL franchise made the announcement on social media on Thursday.
Vijay had replaced South African David Miller as captain midway into the last season. However, that did not change the team's fortune as it finished last for the second successive season.
"With fireworks in his batting, bowling & fielding it's time to unleash the Captain in him. The King of our Pride this season - @Gmaxi_32! (sic)" the franchise tweeted.
The management has preferred Maxwell over the likes of Eoin Morgan, who captained England to the 2016 World T20 final, and Darren Sammy, who led the West Indies to two World T20 titles.
Maxwell, who is currently in India with the Australian Test squad, had a quiet last two IPL seasons by his standards, scoring 324 runs in 22 games.
He, however, was instrumental in taking the team to its maiden IPL final in 2014.
Kings XI also have a new second home this season, at the Holkar Stadium in Indore, where they will play three matches while the rest of the games will be played at PCA Stadium.
According to an official statement, Morgan has been fined Rs 24 lakh while rest of his team members in the playing XI were each fined lesser of either Rs 6 lakh or 25 percent of their individual match fee.
The IPL 2021, which was suspended midway into the league in May owing to multiple COVID-19 cases in its bio-bubble, will resume in the UAE on Sunday and Chahal will be one of the many players trying to reclaim his place in the national team.
Morgan lavished praise on the lanky southpaw Iyer for his "imposing" innings at the top of the order.
