Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) are on the lookout for a new bowling coach ahead of the 17th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) with South African pace legend Dale Steyn reportedly opting to take a break.
According to Cricbuzz, Steyn has taken permission to be relieved of his responsibilities for IPL 2024 but is expected to return to the role the following season. The responsibility of naming an interim replacement will fall on head coach Daniel Vettori with the franchise expected to make an announcement soon.
Steyn, who has represented both Hyderabad franchises in the IPL — the now-defunct Deccan Chargers as well as SRH — had joined the ‘Orange Army’ as their bowling coach in 2022 and has since overseen the meteoric rise of young Indian quicks such as express pacer Umran Malik.
The report also stated that Australia Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins, who had been acquired by the franchise for a whopping Rs 20.5 crore in the mini-auction that took place in Dubai in December, is likely to be named the new skipper of the franchise. Cummins briefly was the most expensive player in the history of the IPL until being overtaken by fellow Australian pacer Mitchell Starc, who went to Cummins’ former franchise Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 24.75 crore.

Current skipper Aiden Markram has led the Sunrisers franchise to back-to-back titles in SA20, where they play as Sunrisers Eastern Cape. The South African, however, hasn’t quite been able to achieve similar results in the IPL, where SRH finished at the bottom of the table last season and 8th in 2022.

View AllThe fact that Cummins had worked closely with Vettori in the Australian team, where the former New Zealand left-arm spinner served as assistant coach until 2023, is also a reason behind the Aussie’s likely appointment as skipper of the franchise.
That, in addition to the success the Australians have achieved during his reign, landing the World Test Championship as well as the ICC World Cup in a span of five months last year.
