Chelsa’s hunt for Enzo Maresca’s replacement as head coach did not last a week, with the Blues bringing Liam Rosenior on board on a six-year deal just five days after the Italian tenderered his resignation.
Maresca had put in his papers after a turbulent end to 2025 made his stay at Stamford Bridge untenable, with the 45-year-old reportedly on the verge of getting sacked by the board. His exit took the football community by surprise, especially since Chelsea had won the UEFA Conference League as well as the FIFA Club World Cup in the span of a couple of months under his watch last summer.
The six-time English champions, however, will be starting on a fresh note later this week when Rosenior, whose contract runs until 2032, takes charge of the club for the first time during Saturday’s FA Cup third-round tie at Championship club Charlton Athletic.

Rosenior’s coaching journey had begun in 2022 when he took over as Derby Country’s manager on an interim basis following Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney’s resignation from the role.
He would join Hull City, the club he had represented for five years as a player, later that year and was even nominated for the Manager of the Season Award in April 2024, only to be sacked a month later after the club finished seventh in the English second division and failed to qualify for the playoffs.
Rosenior later shifted base to France after joining Ligue 1 club RC Strasbourg as their head coach, helping them qualify for the UEFA Conference League with a seventh-place finish in the 2024-25 season.
And though he had extended his stay at Le Racing by another three years last April, Rosenior parted ways with the club at the halfway stage of the ongoing season after receiving an offer from Chelsea. Both Chelsea and Strasbourg, incidentally, are owned by the same organisation – BlueCo.

At the time of Rosenior’s departure, Strasbourg were seventh on the Ligue 1 table with seven wins, as many defeats and three draws. They are, however, faring much better in the Conference League, where they are yet to suffer a defeat in six outings, winning five and drawing one.
As far as his playing career’s concerned, the full-back had begun his journey with Bristol City in the 2002-03 season and later spent four years with Fulham, with a loan spell at Torquay United in between. That was followed by a three-year stint with Reading in which he spent his final season on loan at Ipswich Town.
Rosenior, however, spent the biggest chunk of his playing career with Hull City, making 144 of his 393 senior appearances with the Kingston upon Hull-based club, helping them qualify for the Premier League at the end of the 2012-13 season and helping them stay there the following year.
The 41-year-old spent the final years of his playing career at Brighton and Hove Albion, announcing his retirement in 2018 after making 44 appearances for the club based in England’s southern coast.
