Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior has emerged as the favourite to replace Enzo Maresca at Chelsea after the club parted ways with the Italian coach on Thursday. Things between Maresca and the Chelsea board had not going well in recent days, with the former manager claiming a lack of support.
Maresca also held talks with Manchester City while being Chelsea coach, a decision that could have led to his sacking. And he could be replaced by Rosenior, an English manager who is currently a coach in Ligue 1.
Why Chelsea want Liam Rosenior
Interestingly, Rosenior’s Strasbourg is also owned by investment consortium BlueCo, which is led by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital and also owns Chelsea.
Todd Boehly-led Chelsea is now in the market for a fifth full-time manager since taking over the club in May 2022.
Rosenior tops the list due to his recent success, as he helped Strasbourg qualify for Europe by finishing seventh in the Ligue 1 in his first season with the club. In November, Strasbourg defeated Crystal Palace before finishing at the top of the 36-team league phase in the Conference League.
He has also earned a reputation for being a coach who can help young players develop and make them adapt to his playing style. A trait Chelsea would welcome.
Chelsea looking at Roberto de Zerbi?
Marseille manager Roberto de Zerbi have also been linked with Chelsea. Roberto de Zerbi was interviewed by Chelsea before they appointed Maresca in 2024.
Besides, Roberto de Zerbi, Chelsea had also interviewed Ipswich coach Kieran McKenna and Tottenham manager Thomas Frank, who was at Brentford in 2024.
De Zerbi brings English Premier League experience with him, having been Brighton manager for two seasons. De Zerbi helped Brighton qualify for Europe for the first time.
Meanwhile, Barcelona legend Xavi Hernandez has also been linked to the Chelsea job, but at this moment it seems to be a rumour.
Former midfielder Frank Lampard’s name has also been mentioned in the English media. Lampard’s Coventry are currently at the top of the Championship.
Meanwhile, Chelsea Under-21s head coach Calum McFarlane will manage the team during Sunday’s match vs Manchester City.
