Congress should thank Modi for removing Article 370: Minister Jitendra Singh

Union minister Jitendra Singh said on Monday that the Congress should thank Prime Minister Narendra Modi for delivering their pledge by repealing Article 370, which was a transitory clause of the Constitution.

He further stated that the Modi government “for the first time” brought grassroots democracy to Jammu and Kashmir.

“When Syama Prasad Mookerjee suggested in the Constituent Assembly that there should be a rethink on it (Article 370), the biggest advocates of the provision including Jawahar Lal Nehru responded by saying ’this will erode over time’. However, Congress could not erode it due to their own political interests. Modiji has done what Congress governments should have done much earlier,” Singh told reporters here.

“I think Congress should thank Modiji for fulfilling their promise and removing what was temporary,” he added.The Union minister inaugurated a seven-day exhibition highlighting the achievements of the Modi government in the past nine years.

Heavy rains bring life to standstill in Rajasthan, Mount Abu records 231 mm rainfall

Heavy to extremely heavy rains brought regular life to a halt in portions of Rajasthan, where Mount Abu in Sirohi district recorded 231 mm of rainfall – the state’s highest in the previous 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Monday.

Due to the state’s constant rainfall, some areas in Sirohi, Ajmer, Pali, Karauli, Jaipur, Jalore, Tonk, and Sikar experienced waterlogging.

According to the MeT department, Abu Road in Sirohi received 160 mm of rain, Ajmer 137 mm, Baniwas in Pali 128 mm, and Masalpur in Karauli 120 mm of rain since yesterday, whilst Sambhar in Jaipur and Bagoda in Jalore received 99 mm apiece and Tonk 98 till 8.30 a.m. on Monday.

Several other areas in Sikar, Ajmer, Jaipur, Bharatpur, Udaipur, Pali, Baran, Bhilwara, Nagaur and Sawai Madhopur also recorded heavy rains.

NCP MLA who attended Sharad Pawar’s programme after split in party joins Ajit Pawar camp

Makarand Patil, an NCP MLA from Maharashtra’s Satara district, said on Monday that he had joined the camp of senior party leader and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar.

Patil stated that he opted to join the Ajit Pawar camp in order to preserve two sugar plants in his constituency that are in financial trouble, as well as to promote development and resolve tourism-related concerns in Wai.

Notably, Patil was there during Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) founder Sharad Pawar’s visit to Karad city, just one day after Ajit Pawar and eight other MLAs joined the Shiv Sena-BJP coalition government.

The Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal against a Delhi High Court ruling rejecting a PIL challenging the RBI circular allowing the exchange of Rs 2,000 currency notes without a requisition slip or ID verification, citing it as an executive policy decision.

A panel of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha rejected an appeal filed in his personal capacity by lawyer Ashwini Updhyay.

“This is the matter of executive policy decision,” stated the bench in dismissing the appeal.

The Delhi High Court rejected the PIL contesting the notices allowing the exchange of Rs 2,000 denomination currency notes without a demand slip or ID verification on May 29.

Multi-crore GST scam: Three more held, total arrests 19

The Noida Police have detained three more people in connection with a multi-billion-dollar GST fraud that has cost the government money, bringing the total number of arrests in the case to 18, according to authorities.

According to the authorities, the fraud involves thousands of phoney firms being formed on the basis of faked Aadhar cards, fake invoices being made, and input tax credit (ITC) being claimed on their behalf.

The GST scam is being investigated by the Sector 20 police station. Three people wanted in this case were apprehended by police on Sunday. Amit alias Monty (42), Ajay alias Mintu (41) and Mahesh (20) have been identified as the three. They were all involved in phoney billing, according to Additional DCP (Noida) Shakti Mohan Avasthy.

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal states government is prepared to deal with any eventuality

The Yamuna River exceeded the 204.5-metre danger level in Delhi as Haryana let extra water into the river from the Hathnikund dam amid heavy rainfall in the higher catchment districts.

The water level is expected to climb to 205.5 metres between 10 a.m. and 12 p.m. on Tuesday, exceeding the 205.33-metre danger mark.

In a news conference, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal stated that while a flood-like situation is unlikely in Delhi, the government is prepared to deal with any eventuality.

On Sunday, the Delhi government issued a flood warning and is raising awareness among residents living along the river’s banks.

Evacuation of individuals in low-lying regions would begin if the water reaches 206 metres, according to Kejriwal.

Adhir moves HC over panchayat poll violence; seeks probe, compensation for victims

The Calcutta High Court on Monday granted senior Congress politician Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury permission to file a case demanding compensation for victims of panchayat vote violence in West Bengal, as well as an impartial probe.

Chowdhury, the state Congress president, testified directly before a bench headed over by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam, alleging that unprecedented violence wracked West Bengal during the July 8 polls.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha elections from Gujarat on Monday.

Jaishankar was brought to the state Assembly complex by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and BJP Gujarat unit president C R Paatil, where he filed his nomination papers to Returning Officer Rita Mehta.

Mumbai receives 31.17% of average annual rainfall this monsoon season

According to the city civic body’s monsoon report, Mumbai has received 31.17 per cent of the annual average rainfall of 2,547 mm as of Monday morning.

On June 25, the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) Mumbai centre proclaimed the start of monsoon in the country’s financial metropolis, a fortnight late.

According to a report from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the IMD Mumbai has recorded 1,043.8 mm of rainfall at its Santacruz observatory (representing the suburbs) and 658.7 mm of rainfall at its Colaba observatory (representing the island city) in the previous 15 days.

The downpour recorded at the Santacruz observatory is 37.49 per cent of the average annual rainfall of 2,784 mm and the figure at the Colaba observatory is 28.52 per cent of the average rainfall of 2,310 mm, according to the report.

Shiv Sena (UBT) head Uddhav Thackeray stated on Monday that the Election Commission (EC) can give a party an electoral symbol but cannot modify its name.

Speaking to media in Amaravati district during a trip of Maharashtra’s Vidarbha area, the former state chief minister further stated that the term ‘Shiv Sena’ was given to him by his grandfather (Keshav Thackeray) and that he will not allow anybody to “steal” it.

The Election Commission assigned the name Shiv Sena’ and its election symbol bow and arrow’ to the organisation led by Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde in February of this year.

The EC permitted the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) group to keep the name Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) and the fiery torch’ election emblem, which it was granted in an interim decision last year.

Kharge asks Centre for PM CARES relief for rain-hit states, speaks to HP CM

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge requested the Centre on Monday to provide additional aid from the PM CARES Fund to states devastated by the severe rains that have pounded various regions of north India, including Himachal Pradesh.

A day after 19 people were killed in landslides and other rain-related accidents, Congress President Rahul Gandhi expressed his worry to Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

Covid cases in India at all-time low since 2020

According to Union Health Ministry statistics published on Monday, India has registered 24 new coronavirus infections, the fewest since January 2020, when the first case of the virus was identified in Kerala.

The total value of the Covid cases is 4.49 crore (4,49,94,599).

Satyendar Jain’s interim bail extended till July 24

The Supreme Court on Monday extended on medical grounds the interim bail granted to former Delhi minister Satyendar Jain in a money laundering case being investigated by the Enforcement Directorate till July 24.

Senior counsel Abhishek Singhvi, representing for Jain, was instructed by a panel of justices A S Bopanna and M M Sundresh to send the medical reports to Additional Solicitor General S V Raju.

Singhvi stated during the brief session that three hospitals had advised surgery for Jain.

On May 26, the Supreme Court granted Jain temporary release for six weeks on medical grounds, stating that a citizen has the right to obtain treatment of his choosing at a private hospital at his own expense.

The ED had arrested Jain on May 30 last year on the charge of laundering money through four companies allegedly linked to him.

A fisherman died and three others went missing when their boat capsized in the surf off the coast of Kerala in the early hours of Monday.

The National Centre for Seismology reported a magnitude 4.9 earthquake in Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda area early Monday.

The tremor struck at 5:38 a.m. There are no early reports of damage, according to authorities.

The epicentre was located 10 km under the earth’s surface in the Doda area. According to the NCS, it happened at 33.15 degrees north and 75.68 degrees east.

According to Gujarat BJP general secretary Pradeepsinh Vaghela, Jaishankar, whose tenure expires on August 18 along with two other Rajya Sabha members from the state, would file his nomination form around midday on Monday.

Jaishankar arrived in Ahmedabad on Sunday and was greeted by Gujarat minister Raghavji Patel, Ahmedabad Mayor Kirit Parmar, and other BJP officials.

While the BJP has not formally announced the names of candidates for the three Rajya Sabha seats up for election on July 24, Jaishankar’s nomination was definite.

10 held for carrying out illegal conversion in UP

Ten persons, including a pastor, were detained on Monday for allegedly engaging in unlawful religious conversion in the Nanpara district of here, police said.

Deputy Superintendent of Police in Nanpara Pastor Baburam is accused of persuading poor people to convert to Christianity in Siddhanpurwa hamlet, according to Rahul Pandey. Other others helped him with this task.

On Sunday, ten persons, including Baburam, were detained after a complaint was filed against 19 people on allegations of unlawful conversion. Pandey stated that efforts are being made to apprehend the other offenders.

According to investigators, Baburam and his wife allegedly enticed the locals to convert to Christianity by offering to treat their ailments, including cancer.

Flood warning in Delhi after Haryana discharges over 1 lakh cusecs of water into Yamuna

The Delhi government issued a flood alert on Sunday after Haryana released more than one lakh cubic metres of water into the Yamuna river from the Hathnikund barrage.

This was the first warning, according to the irrigation and flood control agency, with 1,05,453 cusecs of water discharged at 4 p.m.

The flow rate at the barrage is normally 352 cusecs, although heavy rain in the catchment areas raises the discharge. It takes two to three days for the water from the barrage to reach Delhi.
