The Delhi Police on Friday met clerics of different mosques in the Kardam Puri and Kabir Nagar areas of northeast Delhi, as a part of the confidence-building measure after a spate of violence gripped the district earlier this week and resulted in the deaths of at least 42 people.

‘I have come to see for myself’: Anil Baijal visits riot-hit areas

Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on Friday visited riot-affected areas in northeast Delhi to take stock of the situation and interacted with locals. Baijal visited Maujpur, Jaffrabad  and Gokulpuri, an official said. He was accompanied by senior police officers.

This is the first visit of the Lieutenant Governor to the riot-hit areas after violence broke out on Monday. At least 42 have been killed and over 200 injured in communal clashes in northeast Delhi. The areas worst affected in the violence include Jaffrabad, Maujpur, Chand Bagh, Khureji Khas and Bhajanpura. 

HC seeks govt, police response on plea to ensure security at board exam centres in northeast Delhi

The Delhi High Court Friday asked the AAP government and the police to respond to a plea for ensuring security at board exam centres in northeast Delhi where violence over the amended citizenship law has left 39 people dead and scored injured.

Justice Rajiv Shakdher issued notice to the Delhi government and police on the plea and asked them to ensure security is not breached in board exam centres in violence-hit northeast Delhi.

The Central Board of Secondary Education told the high court that it was optimistic about holding Board exams in the northeast Delhi centres from 2 March. The court had on Wednesday taken note of the “worsening situation” in the area and had directed the CBSE to come up with a plan to re-schedule them or change the affected centres.

Situation peaceful but there is tension in air, says NCW chief after visiting Jaffrabad

The situation is peaceful but there is “tension in the air”, National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Rekha Sharma said on Friday after a visit to Jaffrabad, one of the worst affected areas in the riot-hit northeast Delhi, to look into the condition of women.

Sharma said she would be going back to the area again on Saturday as she could not meet enough women as the police were busy in giving security for Friday prayers.

“We met a few women but the way we wanted to meet them could not happen. The situation was peaceful but tension was there in the air,” Sharma told PTI.

She said she went through the data provided by the police and it showed three women were injured but it wasn’t direct injuries.“No rape or molestation was recorded by the police,” Sharma said.

Section 144 lifted across northeast Delhi till 4 pm

Additional PRO of the Delhi Police, Anil Mittal, told Indian Express, “Across the northeast district, there is relaxation in the imposition of Section 144 in northeast Delhi from 12 pm to 4 pm. A similar relaxation was given from 4 am to 10 am today.”

Man found injured in northeast Delhi, succumbs to injuries at hospital

A 60-year-old scrap dealer was allegedly beaten to death in northeast Delhi on Friday in what appears to be a fresh case of violence. Ayub Shabbir found injured by locals at Karawal Nagar in the morning, his son said.

“My father stepped out today at 5 am but, after some time, two men brought him on a scooter saying he had been thrashed. He had injuries on head and leg,” his 18-year-old son Salman said.

Shabbir was brought to the GTB hospital and succumbed to injuries during treatment, said Salman, who was crying outside the emergency ward.

‘My daughters & I were molested’: Al-Hind Hospital victims recall Delhi riots

“We jumped from the first floor with dupattas wrapped around our bodies to save ourselves,” says a 45-year-old woman at northeast Delhi’s Al-Hind Hospital told PTI, recalling how she and her two daughters were forced to flee their home after a mob allegedly barged in and molested them on Wednesday night. The nightmare ended only after the women entered a Muslim-dominated lane.

The woman is one of the many who have been brought to the Al-Hind Hospital over the past few days after being attacked by armed mobs in violence-hit northeast Delhi. Each has a horrific tale to tell.

Salman Khan, 20, a resident of Karawal Nagar, said he was near his house on Tuesday night when a mob poured a chemical on his back that caused his skin to burn. “Some unidentified people caught me near my house and poured an acid-like liquid on my back. I have no idea what the substance was. It was very hot and my skin started burning as soon as they poured it on me,” he said

Mayawati likens Delhi communal clashes with 1984 anti-Sikh riots, calls for judicial probe

BSP president Mayawati on Friday wrote a letter to President Ram Nath Kovind, demanding a high-level judicial probe monitored by a Supreme Court judge into the violent clashes in Delhi.

Congress cannot lecture BJP on Raj Dharma, says Ravi Shankar Prasad 

Taking a jibe at the Congress, Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad slammed party chief Sonia Gandhi for trying to teach the government ‘Raj Dharma’. He said the party was incapable of lecturing the BJP.

Claiming that Sonia and Priyanka Gandhi had provoked the public, Prasad said, “BJP condemns in strongest possible terms the politics Congress is trying to do when it is most important to work on peace in Delhi,” he said.

Primary job to ensure feeling of security among citizens, says new Delhi police commissioner

Senior IPS officer SN Shrivastava, who on Friday was given the additional charge of the Delhi police commissioner with effect from Sunday, while touring the riot-hit areas in northeast Delhi said, “My primary job will be to ensure that there is a feeling of security and people should also feel police are there for them.”

Shrivastava, a 1985-batch IPS officer, will take charge from incumbent Amulya Patnaik, who demits office on Saturday. He will hold the additional charge of the Delhi police commissioner with effect from Sunday and until further orders, the order issued by the Union Home Ministry said.

In the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Shrivastava was serving as the special director general (training). He had served the Delhi police in various capacities, including as the head of the elite anti-terror wing, Special Cell.

Ever since he rejoined the Delhi police, Shrivastava was busy in controlling the communal violence in northeast Delhi, in which at least 39 people were killed.

JP Nadda avoids question on northeast Delhi violence

BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda avoided questions posed by the media in Shimla on Friday related to communal violence in northeast Delhi.

In an informal chat with media at former Himachal Pradesh chief minister and Congress veteran Virbhadra Singh’s residence, Holly Lodge, Nadda preferred to keep mum when a journalist queried about his reaction to the violence in Delhi. Nadda went towards his vehicle without answering the question.

A total of 39 people have died so far while more than 200 have been injured after communal clashes broke out in the northeast part of the National Capital on Monday.

During his two-day visit to his home state, Nadda came to Singh’s residence on Friday morning to inquire about his health.

Kapil Mishra floats campaign to help raise funds for affected Hindu families in Delhi riots 

A campaign under the leadership of BJP’s Kapil Mishra was floated on Friday to identify underprivileged Hindu families who have been impacted by the communal riots in Delhi. The purpose of the campaign is to provide short term monetary relief to such families.

“The funds will be transferred to the impacted family accounts directly. Regular updates will be provided and will be managed with full transparency,” read the statement. 

Lt Governor of Delhi to visit violence-affected areas today

The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi Anil Baijilal is expected to visit the violence-hit areas in northeast Delhi today, after communal riots broke out in since last Sunday, which had claimed 39 live and injured over 200 people so far.

Northeast Delhi mosques appeal for peace

Local mosques in northeast Delhi appealed on Friday for maintaining peace and harmony in the riot-hit area. The mosques appealed to people to be united and not fall prey to rumours, urging people to report about suspicious people to the authorities and cooperate with the police.

“In case of any emergency, please call on 112,” the announcement said.

BJP leader Kapil Mishra had tweeted a video which purportedly shows AAP’s Tahir Hussain hurling petrol bombs and stones from the terrace of his residence.

Reporters and camera persons were allowed complete access to Hussain’s house yesterday, where petrol bombs, acid packets and slingshots were found. The collection of samples from his residence three days after the clashes broke out raises questions on its purpose; as media persons had even handled the purported material yesterday.

Delhi HC issues notice to Centre, govt seeking on pleas seeking FIR against Gandhi family for hate speech

The Delhi High Court on Friday sought the response of the Centre and Delhi government on a plea seeking lodging of an FIR against Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandh and Priyanka Vadra for allegedly giving hate speeches.

A bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar issued notice to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Delhi government and police on the plea which also seeks registration of an FIR against Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, AAP MLA Amanatullah Khan, AIMIM leaders Waris Pathan and Akbaruddin Owaisi.

Apart from registration of FIRs, the petition also seeks setting up of a Special Investigation Team to look into the alleged hate speeches.

The Delhi High Court also sought response of the Centre, the Delhi government and police on pleas seeking FIR against AIMIM leaders Asaduddin Owaisi, Akbaruddin Owaisi and Waris Pathan for alleged hate speeches.

A bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar issued notices to the Centre, Delhi government and police on the pleas.

One of the pleas also sought NIA probe against AAP leader Amanatullah Khan, actor Swara Bhaskar, radio jockey Sayema  and ex-bureaucrat Harsh Mander for alleged hate speech. Mander had previously filed a plea in Delhi High Court seeking the arrest of four BJP leaders for their incendiary speeches.

All the matters have been listed for hearing on 13 April.

The Delhi High Court on Friday sought reply of the Centre and Delhi government on a plea seeking probe under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act to find out those behind the violence in northeast Delhi.

A bench of Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice C Hari Shankar issued notice to the Delhi government and Ministry of Home Affairs on the plea. The court posted the matter for hearing on 30 April. 

IPS officer SN Shrivastava named Delhi’s police commissioner, replaces incumbent Amulya Patnaik

The Home Ministry cleared the name of senior IPS officer SN Shrivastava as the Special Commissioner of law and order in Delhi, officials said on Friday. Incumbent Amulya Patnaik demits office on Saturday.

Shrivastava’s name has been finalised for the next Delhi police commissioner, a Union Home Ministry official said, adding that he would take charge from Patnaik.

TMC, Congress take out rallies in Kolkata over communal violence in Delhi 

Two separate rallies were taken out in Kolkata on Thursday in view of communal violence in Delhi since the past four days. In an attempt to protect the nation from the “divisive forces”, the Trinamool Congress’s women’s wing and the Congress-backed Chhatra Parishad spearheaded two separate protests in West Bengal.

Thousands of women took part in the rally organised by the Trinamool Mahila Congress. It began at Hazra Crossing and culminated at the Gandhi statue in the Maidan area. Led by state minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, protesters shouted slogans targeting the “politics of polarisation and hatred professed by the Sangh Parivar”. They also protested against alleged police inaction over the violence.

The Chhatra Parishad also took out a rally in Nonapukur area along the AJC Bose Road. Hundreds of students took part in it, condemning the violence in Delhi and also demanding revocation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Delhi Waqf Board to set up relief camps, deliver ration-kits in violence-affected areasThe Delhi

Waqf Board will set up relief camps in violence-hit areas of the city and distribute ration kits in the affected areas, a member of the Board Himal Akhtar said on Thursday.

“As directed by Delhi Waqf Board chairman Amanatullah Khan, the relief camps will be set up in northeast Delhi areas that were affected by the riots. Distribution of milk and biscuits for children and ration kits have also started,” Akhtar had said.

“Many people have lost their houses and are left to fend for themselves as their work has also been affected. We have set up teams to provide ration kits and other items like milk to the riot-affected people,” he said.

Double punishment for AAP leader Tahir Hussain’s boss as well: Manoj Tiwari takes swipe at Arvind Kejriwal 

The day after the AAP councillor Tahir Hussain was suspended from party faction following an FIR being registered in his name under Section 302 IPC at Dayalpur police station, Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari on Friday hit out at AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal, saying that not just Hussain but “his boss must also get double punishment.” 

Tiwari took to Twitter to say that the accused in the case must be hanged within stipulated time. “Four hundred times tattooing a knife to an IB officer? How much did religious intolerance make you fall,” asked Tiwari. 

Brothers killed on way to meet family in violence-hit Gokalpuri; bodies recovered from drain

On the second of the high-pitched violence that Delhi was subjected to, two brothers, Aamir (25) and Hashim (16), had set out from Ghaziabad to Gokalpuri to meet their family and were killed during the communal riots. 

The next day, their family rushed to GTB hospital and identified the bodies that had been pulled out of a drain.

NCW’s Rekha Sharma to visit violence-hit Jaffrabad to take stock of situation 

Rekha Sharma, chairperson of National Commission for Women (NCW), along with two other members, is expected to visit north-east Delhi’s Jaffrabad area to take cognisance of  any grievance or assault on women during the communal clashes in the National Capital, ANI reported. 

‘Violence a part of life, happened previously too when Indira Gandhi was assassinated’: Haryana minister on Delhi riots

Dismissing the reports of clashes in northeast Delhi as “trivial matter”, which turned violent since 24 February, Haryana Assembly Minister Ranjit Chautala on Thursday said, “Riots have taken place before as well, even during the UPA-era. When Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated, entire Delhi was in ashes. This is a part of life. The government is trying its best to contain the situation. 

“This is a matter of Delhi and there will be judicial proceedings involved” Chautala added.

Son of the former political leader Devi Lal, Chautala is an Independent MLA supporting the BJP in the state.
 

Security increased in sensitive areas along Delhi-Ghaziabad border

Security has been increased in sensitive areas along the Delhi-Ghaziabad border in wake of violence in the national capital, Uttar Pradesh Police said on Thursday.

Speaking to ANI, Additional District Magistrate Shailendra Kumar said: “Ghaziabad is divided into 56 zones and 18 sectors. There is peace in the district.

However, in view of the Friday Jumma prayers, police personnel have been deployed in large numbers. “Rapid Action Force is patrolling sensitive areas and social media is also being monitored,” he said.

He said that some people have also been identified for posting inflammatory content on social media and an investigation is underway. Earlier on Thursday, Ghaziabad SSP Kalnidhi Naithani had said that district police prevented a mob from resorting to violence in areas bordering Delhi.

Stop politicising, punish rioters, says Arvind Kejriwal

Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday slammed Opposition parties for politicising violence, saying that the police should act against those responsible for the violence irrespective of political affiliation or religion.

‘No rioter, whichever party they belong to, should be spared. And if those involved in riots are found to be from the AAP, double punishment should be given,’ Kejriwal said

In aftermath of Delhi riots, overworked doctors, kindness of strangers at Al-Hind hospital set example for city admin

Mustafabad is a Muslim dominated area surrounded by Hindu dominated areas on all sides such as Bhajanpura, Dayalpura and Gokulpuri. Since the riots broke out over three days ago, Anwar, who runs a local hospital, says he has not slept. 

“I hadn’t anticipated this kind of thing would happen here. I have been living here for the past ten years, and nothing communal has happened before. It’s small hospital and we are ill-equipped to handle such a high casualty rate. I haven’t slept in the past two days because I am constantly attending to patients,” Anwar said.

According to Anwar, 75 percent of the patients came with severe bullet and pellet injuries. The rest had suffered head injuries due to stone pelting in the area.

Mustafabad man’s genitals ripped apart in Delhi Police firing

A 22-year-old man’s scrotum and penis were ripped apart, and his anal region suffered severe injuries during police firing in Delhi’s Mustafabad on Tuesday, doctors who treated him at Al Hind Hospital said. The man, Mohammad Imran, a welder, was to wed in May, his brother Ibrahim said. Imran’s condition is stable and he is recuperating at LNJP Hospital, to which facility he was shifted the next morning.

According to Shamshuddin, his father, who is a carpenter, he and his son were standing inside one of the lanes of Mustafabad, when the police starting shooting and releasing tear gas to quell the crowd. “It happened within seconds. He was just standing there when he shouted and fell down. His trousers had turned red. We rushed him to the house and realised that it was a big wound.”

‘Record statements, share footage’: Police issues appeal on violence in northeast Delhi

Delhi Police on Thursday issued an appeal requesting people, including media persons, to come forward and give their statements and share video footage in connection with the violence in northeast Delhi.

The appeal read, “Whereas incidents of clashes have taken place in the northeast district, Delhi since 23 February. All those who are witnesses to the incidents or have captured any activity on their mobile phones or camera are hereby requested to come forward and give their statements, footage and pictures in their possession at the DCP office, northeast district, Seelampur, Delhi, during office hours, on any working day within seven days.”

Police said witnesses can also contact on mobile numbers: 8750871221, 8750871227 to share information. The identity of the witnesses will be kept secret, they said.

AAP councillor Tahir Hussain denies involvement in killing of IB staffer

On Thursday, reports emerged saying that bits of broken bricks and glass was found on the terrace of the AAP councillor’s home. Later in the day, he was booked on charges of murder and arson. Hussain, however, has denied involvement in the killing and called the allegations against him “ baseless ”.

Ankit Sharma (26), who worked for the IB, had gone missing on Tuesday and his body was found in a drain near his home in northeast Delhi’s riot-hit Chand Bagh area on Wednesday. His family members claimed that the local councillor and his associates were behind the killing. Hussain rejected the allegations.

Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP govt announces relief measures for victims of Delhi violence

Addressing a press conference, Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday announced an ex-gratia sum of Rs 1 lakh and a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the families of the deceased as the toll in the violence rose to 38, with at least 200 injured.

Announcing a slew of measures, he also said that the government will bear the cost of treatment of those injured in the violence and are admitted to private hospitals under the government’s Farishte scheme.

The chief minister also listed out several peace and rehabilitation measures. He said an immediate relief of Rs 25,000 would be given to those whose houses have been burnt, while the government would also provide free books and uniforms to students who have lost them to the riot.

Delhi Police forms two SITs to probe northeast Delhi violence

The Delhi Police Thursday transferred northeast Delhi riots probe to the crime branch. The cases will be probed by two Special Investigation Teams (SITs), officials said on Thursday. The police has so far filed 48 FIRs.

The teams will be headed by Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCP) Joy Tirkey and Rajesh Deo. The teams will have four Assistant Commissioner of Police-rank officers each and the probe will be supervised by Additional Commissioner of Police BK Singh.

BJP targets AAP’s Tahir Hussain over death of IB staffer during riots in Delhi

BJP leaders accused Tahir Hussain of instigating violence and triggering riot-like situation after reports said that bits of broken bricks and glass was found on the terrace of the AAP councillor. Ironically, BJP leaders like Kapil Mishra, are themselves facing the heat for raising hate slogans against a particular community, which many have said acted as a catalyst resulting in the Delhi riots.

Hussain, however, has denied any involvement in the riots or the killing of the Intelligence Bureau staffer Ankit Sharma during the clashes and said that the allegations were “baseless”.  He called for an impartial probe into the incident and said action should be taken against the guilty.

“It is wrong to target me. I and my family have nothing to do with it,” Hussain said. The AAP leader also demanded strict action against BJP leaders responsible for giving inflammatory speeches.

FIR against AAP councillor Tahir Hussain over involvement of killing of IB officer; party suspends him 

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor T ahir Hussain was booked for murder, arson and violence on Thursday in connection with the spate of violence that erupted in northeast Delhi this week, reports have confirmed. Family of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer Ankit Sharma, who died during the riots, have accused Hussain of killing him, an allegation that has been denied by the AAP councillor.

On Thursday evening, the Delhi Police registered an FIR against Hussain under Section 302 (murder), among others at the Dayalpur police station, News18 reported. The AAP, which is the ruling party in Delhi after a landslide win in the Assembly polls held on 8 February, reportedly suspended Hussain after he was booked by the Delhi Police.

At least 7,000 paramilitary forces in place since 24 Feb: Home Ministry 

Nearly 7,000 central paramilitary forces have been deployed in the affected areas of northeast District since 24 February, according to the Ministry of Home Affairs.  

Besides, the Delhi Police has also deployed three Special CPs, six Joint CPs, one Additional CP, 22 DCPs, 20 ACPs, 60 Inspectors, 1,200 other ranks and 200 lady police under the overall supervision of Commissioner of Police to effectively guide and supervise police response so as to contain and normalise the situation.

Restrictive orders under Sec 144 to be relaxed for 10 hours on Friday: MHA

Prohibitory orders imposed under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) will be relaxed for a total of 10 hours in Delhi on Friday in view of improvement in the situation, the Home Ministry said on Thursday.

So 48 FIRs, pertaining to clashes, loss of lives and property, etc, have already been registered and further FIRs would be registered in due course and police has detained or arrested 514 suspects for questioning so far, the ministry said.

Further arrests would be effected in the course of investigation, it added. The Delhi Police has separately set up two SITs for investigating serious offences.

‘No major incident reported in northeast Delhi in 36 hours’: MHA after Amit Shah’s review meeting

No major incident of violence was reported from the riot-hit northeast Delhi in the last 36 hours, the Home Ministry said on Thursday night. The ministry issued the statement after Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the situation in the violence-hit parts of the city in a meeting with senior officials and top police brass.

The ministry said there was no major incident in the last 36 hours in any affected police station of Delhi’s northeast district.As many as 514 suspects were either arrested or detained for questioning and further arrests would be made in the course of investigation, it said.

Medical Superintendent of GTB Hospital Sunil Kumar said, “Over 215 riot victims have been brought to our hospital and treated since 24 February. However, at present only 51 patients are admitted. The condition of almost all patients are stable except one.”

Youngest victim in Delhi’s communal clashes is 17 and oldest 70

The youngest victim, Aman, was 17, while two 70-year-olds were the oldest victims. Twenty-nine of the deceased were male, one female, while the gender of the others was not known.

Thirty-four of the victims were declared dead at the Guru Tegh Bahadur (GTB) Hospital, while the rest were declared dead at the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash (LNJP) Hospital.

Delhi Police says 21 victims succumbed to gunshot wounds

The majority of the victims (21) died of gunshot wounds, four each of “stabbing injuries” and “assault”, three due to “assault with burns” while the cause of death was not known for four people, said Delhi Police.

Of the deceased, 15 were Muslims and 10 were Hindus, while the religious identities of the others is not clear.

One cop, 36 civilians among those killed in riots 

The Delhi Police on Thursday released details of 37 people killed in the recent riots in the northeastern part of the city, a day after the violence subsided. Among those who lost their lives is one police official, while the other 36 are civilians.

Toll in communal clashes in Delhi climbs to 37

After northeast Delhi witnessed four straight days of communal violence over the contentious citizenship law, the toll in the National Capital’s worst riots rose to 37 on Thursday. 

The violence saw an ebb but did not subside completely. Hundreds of police and paramilitary personnel patrolled the streets of the region amid reports of sporadic violence.
