The Rohit Sharma-led outfit had a poor start against Chennai Super Kings in the lung-opener, before bouncing back with a victory over Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and almost winning against RCB. The team’s openers would have to lay a solid foundation for their middle-order batters and this will benefit them both while setting targets or chasing. The most pressing concern, however, happens to be their bowling. Despite boasting of Trent Boult, Jasprit Bumrah and James Pattinson in their ranks, they were hammered all around the park, that too in Dubai where boundaries are not as small as Sharjah. Over-reliance on their death over specialist Jasprit Bumrah is going to cause problems and hence, the bowling must deliver as a whole. Kings XI Punjab too have begun their campaign on a similar note, having won only one game (against RCB) and going down against Rajasthan Royals, and Delhi Capitals (in a Super Over thriller). KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal have impressed everyone with their hitting prowess so far. However, it will be interesting to see if the middle order steps up in case of a rare failure. In Mohammed Shami, they have one of the best death bowlers and in Sheldon Cottrell a really handy option for the powerplay overs. Yet, in their last match against RR, Shami and Cottrell went for 13.25 and 17.33 runs per over respectively. As senior campaigners, the two will aim to lead by example against MI. The day is over for us. MI beat KXIP by 48 runs. Punjab made a good start but the bowling gave away in the death as Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya hit sixes at will. 192 was always going to be a steep target and it became tougher with Bumrah dismissing Agarwal early on. From there, the chase was never on. KXIP need to improve a lot, from bowling to captaincy.

This is brilliant bowling from MI and to some extent very bad batting from KXIP. The bowling plan and execution has been good by MI bowlers but KXIP batsmen have been unable to put pressure on the opponents. Bumrah continues and gets a wicket, his second in the match. Neesham was taken by surprise by the full toss, it was quick as the batsman attempted a pull shot but the top-edge flew to backward point. 80 needed now.

A great night for Chahar. Kept the scoring in check in the middle overs and now finishes the spell with the wicket of Maxwell in his last over. The bowling plan has worked excellently for MI. Maxwell was fed outside off deliveries but his inability to play the drives cost him his wicket. He tried the wild slog across the line and lofted his shot to Boult at cow corner. 83 still needed.

Maxwell was unable to hit through the line on off. He was under pressure and tried to drag the ball from off for a slog on leg. Only managed a top-edge and it was taken by Boult at midwicket.

A wicket on return for Pattinson. The big one in fact. Pooran was looking like the danger man. Pattinson’s plan was simple, to angle the ball away from Pooran. The first ball was sliced over the circle. Pooran tried the same on second ball but the fuller delivery kissed the bat on its way to the keeper. James Neesham has come out to bat. Both he and Maxwell need to play a blinder form here. Six off the over. 87 still needed.

Pooran sliced the offside delivery on the first ball. The timing wasn’t right and he got two runs. Backed himself again but this time the delivery was a bit fuller and took a faint edge to the keeper.

Krunal back for his last over of the day. He bowled full to Pooran to make him target the big fence on midwicket. To Maxwell, he bowled wide to force him to target the same area. Eventually forcing the batters to stick to singles. Just five from the over. 93 still needed.

Bumrah back into attack. The first ball is short and slow, Pooran pulls it with venom to cow corner for a boundary but Burmah makes a good comeback form there. Eventually, just seven from the over. 98 still needed.

Chahar continues and he was inches away from dismissing Pooran. The googly struck the West Indian on pads. The original decision wa not out but Chahar was confident and MI took a review. Rahul Chahar has got the big wicket for MI. Rahul is out, bowled. He was undone by a paddle sweep, the ball was quick enough to beat him and clipped the top of leg stump. Glenn Maxwell has come in as his replacement. And was beaten with a classic legspinner. Four runs from the over.

Talking about boundaries. Pooran gets two in this over. Krunal’s plan was to bowl away from Pooran, out wide to not allow Pooran play with spin but one was going to be executed badly. He pitched one in the arc and Pooran dispatched it over cow corner for a six. Got a boundary with a thick outside edge running past the keeper. 15 from the over.

Leg-spinner Rahul Chahar introduced into the attack as soon as powerplay gets over. Good over by the tweaker. Just four singles from the over. Boundaries have not come for last four overs and KXIP batsmen are not going to try something very risky immediately. A good period for MI to finish the quota of spinners.

Another good over for Krunal. Just three form the over but more importantly a wicket also. Karun Nair who came in to replace Agarwal departs for a duck. He wanted to play the cut but the ball wasn’t that short. He ended up inside-edging the ball which pitched and hit the stumps. Nicholas Pooran is the new batsman.

Karun Nair wanted to get going early but that has cost him his wicket. Krunal dragged his length back and Nair was trying for a cut, but ended up inside-edging the ball which hit the pitch and then the stumps.

The dangerous opening pair of KXIP has been broken. Bumrah gets a wicket in his first over. KXIP lose Agarwal. The pacer got some movement off the pitch as his uppish delivery moved in a little after pitching. Agarwal was looking to play a wild flick but got castled. Just one from the over. Karun Nair is the new batsman.

Boom boom Bumrah strikes for MI. Agarwal castled. It was an uppish delivery that moved just a bit after pitching, the angle was into the batsman and Agarwal was looking for a shot to midwicket but missed the ball and it crashed into the stumps.
