After making a superb recovery on the opening day of the first Test against Bangladesh, India tightened their grip with a clinical bowling display to collect a huge first innings lead.
The home team had posted 376 on the board thanks to Ravichandran Ashwin’s (113) sparking centur along with fifties from Ravindra Jadeja (86) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (56), the former narrowly missing out on a century.
Led by Jasprit Bumrah’s 4/50, India would then bundle Bangladesh out for a modest 149 to collect a 227-run first innings lead. Besides Bumrah, Jadeja (2/19), Akash Deep (2/19) and Mohammed Siraj (2/30) also chipped in with a couple of wickets each.
India skipper Rohit Sharma, however, decided against enforcing follow-on in order to give his bowlers a breather.
And though the hosts were off to another shaky start, with batting stalwarts Rohit and Virat Kohli once again getting dismissed for low scores, a patient 33 not out by Shubman Gill ensured India ended the day on 81/3, stretching their lead past 300 in the process .

— Yashasvi Jaiswal has now scored the most runs by an Indian batter after 10 Test appearances, breaking the record previously held by the legendary Sunil Gavaskar. Jaiswal now has 1,094 runs compared to Gavaskar’s 978. The all-time record remains in Donald Bradman’s name, with the Australian legend having scored 1,446 runs in as many Tests.
— With his dismissal of Hasan Mahmud at the stroke of tea, Jasprit Bumrah became the 10th Indian bowler to collect 400 or more international wickets, the list of which is led by spin legend Anil Kumble (953) with Ashwin (744) at the second spot.
