After an admirable fightback with the bat to post a challenging total on the board, India seized control of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai with a clinical bowling display on Day 2.
The visiting team was reduced to 112/8 at tea after Rohit Sharma and Co posted 376 on the board, thanks primarily to Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja’s knocks of 113 and 86 respectively, the two senior spinners adding a massive 199 for the seventh wicket.
Leading the way for the Indian attack was pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who accounted for three of the eight Bangladeshi wickets that fell in the session-and-a-half leading to tea. And in the process, Bumrah added another feather to his cap by completing 400 wickets in international cricket.

The Gujarat and Mumbai Indians pacer achieved the feat after dismissing Hasan Mahmud at the stroke of tea. The Bangladesh pacer was dismissed on 2 after sticking his bat out at a length ball bowled outside off, getting an outside edge that resulted in a simple catch for Virat Kohli in the slips.
Mahmud was Bumrah’s 162nd wicket in the Test format which, together with his 149 wickets in the ODI format and 89 in T20Is, makes him the 10th Indian bowler to collect 400 or more wickets in international cricket.

Spin legend Anil Kumble leads the way with 953 wickets, including 619 in Tests, and is followed by veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, who has 744 wickets including 516 in Tests. Harbhajan Singh, who also used to bowl off-spin, is third on the list with 707 including 417 in Tests.
The top three positions are occupied by spinners, with former India captain the highest wicket-taker among Indian seamers with 687 scalps including 434 in Tests, which used to be the highest in Test cricket at the time of his retirement.
The other bowlers in the top 10 are Zaheer Khan (597), Ravindra Jadeja (570), Javagal Srinath (551), Mohammed Shami (448), Ishant Sharma (434) and Bumrah.
Bumrah would later collect a fourth wicket by castling Taskin Ahmed with a searing yorker, collecting his fourth wicket as a result.
