India collected a massive first innings lead worth 227 after bundling Bangladesh out for a paltry 149 on Day 2 of the first Test in Chennai on Friday.
Bumrah led the way with a haul of 4/50, dismissing opener Shadman Islam (2) and their top batter Mushfiqur Rahim (8) along with Hasan Mahmud and Taskin Ahmed. With his dismissal of Mahmud at the stroke of tea, Bumrah also became the 10th Indian bowler to collect 400 or more wickets in international cricket.
The remaining wickets were distributed evenly among Mohammed Siraj (2/30), Ravindra Jadeja (2/19) and Akash Deep (2/19), with Siraj collecting the final wicket of the Bangladesh innings by having Nahid Rana castled for 11.
The Tigers were staring at the prospect of getting bundled out for less than 100 after getting reduced to 40/5 before a solid 51-run partnership between senior all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan (32) and wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das (22) briefly reignited Bangladeshi hopes of avoiding follow-on and going past 200.
Bangladesh, however, suffered another collapse after Jadeja broke the partnership by dismissing Das.
All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz tried to lead a fight back with the rest of the tail-enders, remaining unbeaten on 27 that included the only six of the innings, but ultimately was unsuccessful in getting his team past the 150 mark.
