BCCI Devajit Saikia has said that following the Indian government’s policy not to boycott Pakistan in multilateral tournaments, as it looks to host big tournaments like the Olympics, the cricket board decided against boycotting Pakistan’s match in the Asia Cup 2025.

“We have decided to participate in the Asia Cup because it is a multinational competition. It is just like an Olympic, any FIFA tournament, AFC tournament, or International Athletics Tournament,” Devajit Saikia told HT.

“So we cannot boycott the multinational tournament because if we boycott this tournament, that will bring a lot of negativity for all our future endeavours of hosting any multinational tournament in the country.

“So therefore, as it is a multinational competition, we are participating because we do not have a direct call or direct decision whether to play or not to play.”

“It’s a very sensitive issue and I’ve got no doubt the players share the compassion and feeling of the vast majority of the Indian public,” Ten Doeschate said. “The Asia Cup was in limbo for a long period of time and we were just waiting. We didn’t think we were going to be coming at one stage.

“You know what the Indian government’s stance is and now the team and particularly the players, you have to put those sentiments and the emotions behind. That’s something we addressed in the team meeting today.

“We’re aware of people’s feelings, at the same time we’ve got to go out, and the guys get a chance to play for their country, and they’ll be as professional and focused as they can be given the circumstances.”

Sunil Gavaskar says the call to play against Pakistan has been taken by the Indian government that India would not boycott Pakistan in multilateral tournaments, hence the players and BCCI will have to follow it.
