India were firmly in command on Day 2 of the first Test against Bangladesh in Chennai after bowling the visiting team out for a sub-par total and collecting a massive first innings lead in the process.
Led by Jasprit Bumrah’s 4/50, India bundled Bangladesh out for a sub-par 149 to walk away with a lead of 227 after posting a challenging 376 on the board in their first innings.
Bumrah, who went past the 400-wicket mark with his four-wicket haul, was ably supported by the trio of Mohammed Siraj (2/30), Ravindra Jadeja (2/19) and Akash Deep (2/19).
While Akash struck twice in as many deliveries in the final over before lunch, Siraj collected the final wicket of the innings to ensure the Tigers fell short of the 150-mark. Senior off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, meanwhile, went wicketless after bowling 13 overs, in which he conceded 29 runs while collecting four maidens.
Senior all-rounder and former captain Shakib Al Hasan top-scored for the visitors with a knock of 32, stitching a partnership worth 51 with wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das that briefly reignited Bangladeshi hopes after they were reduced to 40/5.
Left-arm spinner Jadeja’s dismissal of Das, however, would lead to another mini-collapse, with the Tigers losing three wickets for just 21 runs.
All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz remained unbeaten on 27 off 52 deliveries, which includes the only six by a Bangladeshi batter so far in the match, after Siraj castled Nahid Rana to bring the innings to an end.

India skipper Rohit Sharma, however, decided against enforcing the follow-on in order to give his pacers a breather after bowling in hot and humid conditions throughout the day.
The hosts were off to yet another shaky start with openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (10) and skipper Rohit (5) as well as Virat Kohli (17) getting dismissed cheaply.
Kohli decided against using a review after he was adjudged LBW off Mehidy’s bowling, only for a spike to appear on UltraEdge at the time of the ball passing close to the inside half of his blade.
However, Shubman Gill’s patient 33 not out ensured India ended the day on a relatively comfortable 81/3, their lead stretching to 308 as a result. Batting at the other end at the close of play was wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who remained unbeaten on 12 after collecting a four and a six.
Brief Scores:
India 376 and 81/3 in 23 overs (Shubman Gill 33*, Virat Kohli 17; Nahid Rana 1/12) lead Bangladesh 149 in 47.1 overs (Shakib Al Hasan 32, Mehidy Hasan Miraz 27*; Jasprit Bumrah 4/50) by 308 runs.
