Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capital Match 3 LIVE Score Updates: Rabada cuts short Cutting’s innings. Yuvraj is Mumbai’s only hope at the moment. He has again hit one shot that lands in no man’s land. Third or fourth such occasion in this innings. Mumbai need 55 runs in 18 balls
That’s the end of the first double-header of this season. And two good matches, the first one between KKR and SRH going down the wire. It was all down to Andre Russell’s power in th end as he smashed a 19-ball 49 to take KKR home. Mumbai Indians started well with the ball in the second match but a storm called Pant hit them hard and took the game away. Two great knocks from two brilliant players. KKR and DC collect their first points.
We will be back with another IPL 2019 clash on 25 March. Rajasthan Royals are playing Kings XI Punjab at Jaipur. The game starts at 8 PM. Catch you there. For now, good bye and good night.
Rishabh Pant is Player of the Match.
Pant: It’s been a great journey. Feels good when your team wins and you have scored runs. I always play according to situation. I needed to increase run-rate of the team and I played my shots. In T20, you have to do something different. That’s why I play those shots.
Shreyas Iyer, Delhi Capitals captain: Well both of them were good in their way. But obviously, we are off to a good start. I was really well prepared to take down the captaincy as I have been leading India A. In all, it’s been a great experience so far. There isn’t any secret. In terms of our preparations, we have been amazing. Our overall atmosphere is amazing at the moment, and it’s important to be consistent. (On Pant) He’s a really destructive batsman. Only word that comes to mind. Suddenly his strike rate goes up to 250. That’s where we changed our game in the first innings. Really helpful to have him in the team. (On Rabada) He’s an amazing bowler to be around. He came up to me in the nets, and asked me,“Did you see me bowling?”
The SA pacer finished with figures of 2/23 from four overs
Delhi have two points in the kitty and it’s a complete team effort with Rishabh Pant leading the way. Shikhar Dhawan was slow, but held the innings together and had that important partnership with Colin Ingram. Mumbai bowled a lot of short deliveries on either side of the wicket which were punished, and the pair also displayed intelligence by picking up the singles at a good frequency. It was just the base that was needed for Pant to come and start playing his shots.
The turning point in the game was the way Pant negated Jasprit Bumrah. Easily one of the best death-over bowlers in world cricket currently, Bumrah hardly had an answer against Pant. For me the best shot, though, was Rahul Tewatia sweeping Bumrah for a six.
Delhi were brave to drop the experienced Amit Mishra for Tewatia. Decisions like these when they pay off look great. Tewatia did not have good outing with the ball, but picked up four catches apart from hitting that six off Bumrah. On the field, Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy was impressive. He made appropriate bowling changes, and Ishant Sharma picking up two scalps in the Power Play was a bonus really.
Then the way Kagiso Rabada capitalised was crucial. He hit good pace right from his first over and troubled all batsmen. Mumbai would think 214 was a bit too much to chase, but a few good partnerships could have taken them deep into the game. No one really had a plan, and even though Yuvraj Singh played some beautiful shots for his 15th half-century in IPL, he lacked support from the other end. Another season opener and another loss for Mumbai. Memorable debut for Sourav Ganguly as Delhi’s advisor.
Rohit Sharma, MI captain: First game is always challenging for most teams. We have made a lot of mistakes today. We were in the game for first 10 overs when we were bowling. But you need to get credit to Pant. A lot of new guys in the squad. Takes time to get going. But we all are professionals and have to come out positively in next game. Pitch was good, we ended up with 180. Yuvi batted brilliantly. But had somebody in the top four got 80, things would have been different.
OUT! Delhi win by 37 runs
Faster one from Tewatia and McClenaghan missed it, he was out of the crease and Pant dislodged the stumps in quick time. That’s the end of match as Jasprit Bumrah won’t bat because of injury. McClenaghan st Pant b Rahul Tewatia 10(8)
Tewatia to bowl the final over.
After 19 overs,Mumbai Indians 176/8 ( Mitchell McClenaghan 10 , Rasikh Salam 5)
The match is done and dusted after the end of Yuvraj Singh in the last over. Mumbai need 38 runs in 6 balls, that looks completely out of reach.
Rasikh Salam, right handed bat, is the new batsman in
OUT! Yorker length from Rabada, Yuvraj flicks it to leg side and Tewatia running in from the deep takes another good catch, his fourth tonight. This wicket pretty much ends Mumbai’s quest in the chase. Yuvraj c Rahul Tewatia b Rabada 53(35) [
After 18 overs,Mumbai Indians 168/7 ( Yuvraj Singh 53 , Mitchell McClenaghan 9)
Boundaries are coming but not in abundance. 46 still needed off 12. Mumbai should look to get as close to the target as possible so that run-rate is taken care of.
FOUR! Fuller in length and McClenaghan plays an ugly heave but to good effect and gets a boundary at extra cover
FOUR! Fifty for Yuvraj, as he heaves it but only manages to outside edge it and get a boundary to third man.
After 17 overs,Mumbai Indians 159/7 ( Yuvraj Singh 48 , Mitchell McClenaghan 5)
Rabada cuts short Cutting’s innings. Yuvraj is Mumbai’s only hope at the moment. He has again hit one shot that lands in no man’s land. Third or fourth such occasion in this innings. Mumbai need 55 runs in 18 balls
FOUR! McClenaghan goes cheeky and scoops it over the short fine-leg region for a boundary
Mitchell McClenaghan, left handed bat, is the new man in
OUT! Beautiful delivery from Rabada, full in length, quick in pace, takes the edge off Cutting’s bat and Pant collects it behind the wickets. Cutting chose DRS but it did not help much. Cutting c Pant b Rabada 3(4)
Rabada back into the attack.
After 16 overs,Mumbai Indians 150/6 ( Yuvraj Singh 47 , Ben Cutting 2)
Wickets falling at one end, but Yuvraj Singh has not yet given up. Two lusty blows in the last over. The match is on till he is there. Mumbai need 64 runs in 24 balls. We go into last time out of the day.
SIX! Little short and Yuvraj quickly transfer wright to back foot and hits it over the deep mid-wicket boundary for a maximum
SIX! Flighted delivery and Yuvraj goes big over the sight screen
Axar back on.
After 15 overs,Mumbai Indians 134/6 ( Yuvraj Singh 33 , )
Boult’s over started off with a four. Krunal added one more to his tally before departing on the last ball of the over.
Mumbai need 80 runs in 30 balls
OUT! Krunal tries to go over deep mid-wicket and mistimes it, the ball goes straight into the hands of Rahul Tewatia, who has taken his third catch today. He is not dropping anything today. Krunal Pandya c Rahul Tewatia b Boult 32(15)
FOUR! Krunal plays with a straight bat again, slams it past the umpire and bowler, hit very hard, ball races away for four.
FOUR! Poor ball from Boult, on Krunal’s legs and all he needed to was flick it to the leg side for a boundary. That’s what he did.
Keemo Paul brings back fond memories from 2016 Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh where he became famous or rather infamous for mankading a batsman in a must-win game against Zimbabwe. Had Zimbabwe won then Windies would not have made it to the knockouts. They eventually won the title under Shimron Hetmeyer. Ian Bishop, rightly, wrote an article supporting why mankading is perfectly legal. World cricket stood behind Paul. A few days after the incident some journalists met him in Mirpur ahead of the final against India, and he was very humble in the way he spoke. Since then his rise has been noteworthy, and he has done his reputation no harm with a good IPL debut. His variations have been difficult to pick up for the Mumbai batsmen.
Boult returns to the attack.
After 14 overs,Mumbai Indians 123/5 ( Yuvraj Singh 32 , Krunal Pandya 23)
Ishant comes back into the attack and has been welcomed with a six. He tries slower ones and beats Krunal’s bat on a few occasions but goes outside the off-stump and gets hit for two boundaries. Mumbai still in it.
FOUR! Room given to Krunal and he puts all his power into the shot, reaches the ball and gets a boundary at third man region.
FOUR! Low full-toss and Krunal smashes it past the covers for a hard-hit boundary. There was no stopping this.
SIX! Wow, good length ball and Krunal slams it, this goes sailing over the long-on region for a maximum.
Ishant back into the attack.
After 13 overs,Mumbai Indians 108/5 ( Yuvraj Singh 32 , Krunal Pandya 7)
Paul has been very clever with the change in pace in his spell. In this over, his slower ones were tough to play, Yuvraj and Krunal were hit on the chest off the slower balls. Mumbai need 106 runs in 42 balls.
FOUR! Fullish, and Krunal plays it with a straight bat, gets it past mid-off fielder, gets a boundary.
Paul continues
After 12 overs,Mumbai Indians 101/5 ( Yuvraj Singh 31 , Krunal Pandya 3)
Patel got hit for 20 runs in his first over. Iyer made him bowl another one and he has delivered, getting rid of junior Pandya. The senior one has walked in and MI would hope that a good stand comes up now between him and Yuvraj.
OUT! Hardik departs for a duck, straighter one from Patel and Hardik gives a simple caught and bowled to him. He was looking to start hitting from the word go and that brought his downfall. Hardik Pandya c and b Axar 0(2)
Patel continues
After 11 overs,Mumbai Indians 95/4 ( Yuvraj Singh 28 , Hardik Pandya 0)
Pollard has perished trying to hit shots, could not spot the slower one from Paul, who has bowled with a lot of heart and intelligence. Yuvraj has got form back and Hardik has joined him in the middle. Not all is lost for MI.
Hardik Pandya, right handed bat, is the new batsman in
OUT! The knuckle ball has worked for Paul as Pollard fails to spot it and gets deceived, carries on with the shot, the ball goes up and up, when it came down, Tewatia was beneath it and took a good catch**. Pollard c Rahul Tewatia b K Paul 21(13)**
Delhi were 82 for 2 at 10 overs, Mumbai are 89 for 3. Axar Patel could consider himself a bit unlucky to concede so many runs, but he has been slipping down the radar for a few seasons now. He is the weak link in Delhi’s bowling line-up. So, the game is even stevens. Now for Mumbai’s entire batting order combining to do a Pant on Delhi. It’s doable on this ground.
FOUR! Fuller in length and Yuvraj punches it in air, the ball flies over the mid-off fielder for a boundary
Paul continues
After 10 overs,Mumbai Indians 89/3 ( Yuvraj Singh 23 , Kieron Pollard 20)
What an over for Mumbai Indians. Not only did 20 came off it but also Yuvraj Singh came into form, hitting two fours and one six.
FOUR! On the legs again and again Yuvrahj sweeps to good effect, fetches four at fine-leg region
SIX! Short ball and then Yuvraj stretched his arm and hits it over the deep cover for a maximum.
The rustiness of Yuvraj Singh is there to be seen. He has not had a good run in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, and here is struggling against the pace of Keemo Paul. A boundary here or a six there will come from his bat because of the experience he possesses, but the fluency is missing. Also, one has to take into consideration that Yuvraj’s IPL record has always been below average. That raises a question – Whether Mumbai Indians would have been better off with Ishan Kishan in their line-up?
FOUR! Fired it on the legs of Pollard who flicks it to fine leg for a boundary. Ishant Sharma gave a chase but it was not enough.
FOUR! Yuvraj sweeps and the ball goes straight to short fine-leg but Dhawan fielding there makes mess of it and the ball runs away for four.
Axar Patel, left-arm orthodox, brought into the attack
After 9 overs,Mumbai Indians 69/3 ( Yuvraj Singh 8 , Kieron Pollard 15)
Paul is on now. Yuvraj is not looking at his best at the moment but does get the boundary off the punultimate ball of the over to release some pressure. 8 off the over as we go into time out.
FOUR! Room provided by Paul and Yuvraj cuts it for a boundary to wide off third man region
Keemo Paul, right-arm fast medium, brought into the attack
Just soaking in Rishabh Pant’s onslaught. The guy needed it for all the criticism he has faced in the last few weeks. This is the kind of role the Indian team management expects him to play, but for that he needs to given a fair run. He has to first know if he is a regular in the XI or not. Only then will he have the confidence to go full throttle, fully aware that a failure is not going to hamper his chances.
After 8 overs,Mumbai Indians 61/3 ( Yuvraj Singh 2 , Kieron Pollard 14)
Spin on offer for the first time in the second innings. Pollard is enjoying him. Hits him for a four and then a six. Yuvra, on the other end, is looking nervous against the spin. Works well for him that Pollard is getting runs from the other end.
SIX! Massive from Pollard, yet again, stretched arms to reach to the pitch of the ball and picks it from there and with a lot of power hits it into the second tier of the stand over the sight screen.
FOUR! Pollard effect as he hits it off the pitch of the ball and hits it straight down the ground. Bludgeoned really
Rahul Tewatia, right-arm leg break, brought into the attack
After 7 overs,Mumbai Indians 49/3 ( Yuvraj Singh 1 , Kieron Pollard 3)
Rabada continues. We saw how Harbhajan showed how effective he was still in T20 cricket. Today’s Yuvraj turn. He is facing one of the best pacers in the world in Rabada and he cannot take time to settle down. On the other end, there is Pollard, who has everything to prove whenever he bats. Heat is on.
Rabada continues
After 6 overs,Mumbai Indians 46/3 ( Yuvraj Singh 0 , Kieron Pollard 1)
An exciting over comes to an end. Iyer displayed splendid fielding effort to remove Yadav and then De Kock hit two boundaries. Ishant had the last laugh by removing him.
Talking points after the end of Mumbai Indians’s Power Play
— Quinton de Kock hitting Trent Boult and Ishant Sharma around the park
— Ishant picking up his first IPL wicket after 1,075 days (good catch by Rahul Tewatia), and then topping it up with the big one of de Kock.
— Kagiso Rabada hitting 150kmph in his very first over, which made for sensational viewing
— Mumbai felt the pressure in the next over when Ishant came for his third over. A direct hit from Shreyas Iyer sent Suryakumar Yadav back to the dugout
One would believe Delhi Capitals are slightly ahead in the game at this stage. De Kock’s wicket has tilted it in Delhi’s favour. Onus now on Yuvraj Singh, who has usually been a slow starter in T20s, and Kieron Pollard to bring Mumbai back into the game
OUT! Ishant strikes again, was not a great ball, de Kock heaves it to the leg side but this goes directly to Boult at fine-leg. Mumbai lose third wicket in quick time. de Kock c Boult b Ishant 27(16)
FOUR! Another boundary by de Kock, on good length and he hits it over the mid-wicket for a boundary
FOUR! Short ball, shoulder height and de Kock pulls Ishant for a boundary to fine-leg
OUT! Terrific display of fielding from Shreyas Iyer at mid-off who picks up the ball and hits it directly on the run to get his Ranji team-mate Suryakumar Yadav out as he tried to sneak in a quick single. Suryakumar Yadav run out (Shreyas Iyer) 2(6)
Ishant continues
After 5 overs,Mumbai Indians 37/1 ( Quinton de Kock (W) 19 , Suryakumar Yadav 2)
Pace bowling at its best at the moment Rabada gets the ball in hand. Almost got his South African compatriot de Kock with a yorker. Bowling at speed of up to 150kphs.
Big news coming in from the Mumbai Indians dressing room, one that will also give all Indian fans a big sigh of relief!
Kagiso Rabada, right-arm fast, brought into the attack
Just for record Ishant Sharma has taken a wicket in the IPL after 1,075 balls. His last victim was Brendon McCullum on April 14, 2016.
After 4 overs,Mumbai Indians 33/1 ( Yadav 0 , Quinton de Kock (W) 18)
Ishant Sharma provides the first breakthrough for Capitals. But have to say, this was more of a Tewatia wicket, who took a very good catch in the deep. He was calm and focussed. Sunil Gavaskar, on air, points out that Ishant has taken his first wicket in two years, so it better gets counted into his account. Humour aside, a very good start from Capitals as they have removed The Hitman.
Suryakumar Yadav, right handed bat, is the new batsman in
OUT! Ugly heave from Rohit, does not connect well, ball goes high up in the air and it went down at some pace, Rahul Tewatia at fine-leg takes a splendid catch. Rohit c Rahul Tewatia b Ishant 14(13)
Quinton de Kock has already found his groove and Mumbai Indians would hope him to continue. The first three overs have been eventful, with an edge off Rohit Sharma’s bat going through the vacant slip region for a boundary. Then the way de Kock took on Trent Boult made for delightful viewing. I am interested to see how Ishant Sharma, who is returning to IPL with a new team after a season’s gap, performs. Its one tournament where he has not yet established his credentials.
FOUR! On the legs of Rohit Sharma and he flicks it but not too well, it flies to deep fine-leg, Rabada chased it down from inside the circle but the ball raced away for four
Ishant continues
After 3 overs,Mumbai Indians 28/0 ( Rohit Sharma (C) 10 , Quinton de Kock (W) 18)
Quinton de Kock announces his arrival in IPL 2019 with this over. Four, six and then another four. 17 runs came in the last Boult over.
FOUR! Juicy full-toss on de Kock’s pads and he flicks it easily for boundary to deep fine-leg.
SIX! Beautiful, still head, walks out and smashes it over the deep mid-wicket boundary for a huge one
FOUR! Full flourish of the bat from de Kock, ball angling into his pads and he hits it uppishly over mid-wicket for a boundary.
Boult continues.
After 2 overs,Mumbai Indians 11/0 ( Rohit Sharma (C) 9 , Quinton de Kock (W) 2)
Ishant Sharma bowls from the other end. He is making a comeback in the league after two-year gap. Almost got Rohit on the penultimate ball of the over. Produced edge off his bat but there was no slip to take the catch.
FOUR! Slip goes off and Ishant produced a thick edge that flies over the vacant slip region. Rohit with the first boundary of the chase.
Ishant Sharma, right-arm fast medium, brought into the attack
After 1 overs,Mumbai Indians 5/0 ( Rohit Sharma (C) 4 , Quinton de Kock (W) 1)
Trent Boult starts Delhi’s defence of 214 runs. Rohit has looked nervous against left-arm pacers upfront. If Mumbai think of winning this one, Rohit has to fire.
Back with the chase!
Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock begin chase. Trent Boult to bowl the first over.
Can MI chase this down?
Pant is trending now!
After 20 overs,Delhi Capitals 213/6 ( Rishabh Pant (W) 78 , Rahul Tewatia 9)
Tewatia collects a single off the first ball of the final over. Pant then smashes the next one for a six towards the square-leg fence to bring up the 200 for DC. A leg-bye off the third, before Tewatia joins the party by collecting a six off the fourth. Singles collected off each of the last two balls. Bumrah puts in a dive in the last delivery, and appears to hurt his left shoulder, grimacing in pain afterwards — something that will give his India teammates a reason to worry as well.
Meanwhile, Delhi Capitals finish on a mammoth 213/6, thanks to the fireworks from Rishabh Pant’s bat, the Delhi boy finishing on 78 off just 27 balls.
The tussle between Bumrah and Pant was the most fascinating part of the last phase of Delhi innings. It was really all about Pant. His one-handed shots were a delight to watch. His confidence rubbed off to Rahul Tewatia who swept, yes swept, Bumrah for a six! Delhi would believe they have got those extra 20 runs to factor the dew. We know Mumbai have never chased 200 plus score in IPL.
Agree?
SIX! Now Tewatia joins the party, slogging this over the midwicket fence. DC 211/6
SIX! Pant slogs a full delivery from Bumrah towards the square-leg fence for another six, bringing up the 200 for DC in the process! DC 204/6
SIX! Pant slogs a full delivery from Bumrah towards the square-leg fence for another six, bringing up the 200 for DC in the process! DC 204/6
After 19 overs,Delhi Capitals 197/6 ( Rishabh Pant (W) 71 , Rahul Tewatia 1)
Pant smashes the ball hard off the first ball, but only collects a single. Tewatia gets off the mark with a single off the next ball. Pant collects a brace off the third, before smashing a six off the fourth. An under pressure Salam concedes a wide right after the big hit. A six and a four to end Salam’s quota, as he concedes 21 off his last over. Some serious demolition work by the Delhi boy right now.
FOUR! Full toss outside off, and this one’s smashed through the off side for a boundary. Pant’s on fire right now! DC 197/6
SIX! The biggest hit of the innings, and this one comes off a one-handed slog from Pant! Slower one from Salam timed perfectly. DC 193/6
SIX! Pant hooks a short ball from Salam to ruin what was otherwise turning out to be a fine over from the debutant. DC 186/6
Rasikh Salam brought back for his final over. Rishabh Pant on strike.
After 18 overs,Delhi Capitals 176/6 ( Rishabh Pant (W) 52 , Rahul Tewatia 0)
A very eventful penultimate over from Bumrah, one in which he concedes 15 runs aside from dismissing Axar off the second ball. Four of those 15 runs are collected off the penultimate delivery, which brings up the half-century for Pant.
FOUR! Pant brings up his half-century in style, guiding the ball towards the square-leg fence with a short-arm jab! DC 175/6
SIX! Pant flicks a full delivery from Bumrah towards the square-leg fence! This should be an interesting battle now! DC 171/6
As expected Bumrah strikes and now Mumbai Indians will be hoping to keep Delhi Capitals within 185, which they would be happy to chase. Unless Pant shifts his gear by a few more notches then Delhi will rue these overs.
OUT! Patel lasts just two deliveries, as he holes out to the fielder at third man after going for a cheeky ramp shot. DC 165/6
Patel c Salam b Bumrah 4(2)
FOUR! Axar Patel gets off the mark with a boundary, guiding the ball behind square on the off side with a cut! DC 165/5
Jasprit Bumrah brought back into the attack. New batsman Axar Patel on strike.
After 17 overs,Delhi Capitals 161/5 ( Rishabh Pant (W) 41 , Axar Patel 0)
Keemo Paul collects a brace at the start of the over, bringing up the 150 for the visiting team in the process. Pant collects his fourth boundary with a mishit two balls later. McClenaghan gets his third wicket off the penultimate ball, the result of a thick edge off Paul’s bat that results in a simple catch to the MI keeper de kock. Axar Patel walks out to the crease. Boundary to pant to end the over. McClenaghan signs off with figures of 3/40.
FOUR! Boundary to end McClenaghan’s final over, the result of a pull by Pant towards the fine leg fence. One bounce before it crosses over the boundary cushion. DC 161/5
OUT! McClenaghan collects his third wicket in his final over, as Paul perishes while swiping across the line. Gets a thick edge, offering keeper de Kock a simple catch. DC 157/5
Paul c de Kock b McClenaghan 3(5)
FOUR! Wild full toss from McClenaghan, and Rishabh mishits this towards the wide long off fence, the ball falling in no man’s land before rolling away towards the fence. DC 156/4
Mitchell McClenaghan brought into the attack in the 17th over.
After 16 overs,Delhi Capitals 149/4 ( Rishabh Pant (W) 32 , Keemo Paul 0)
Dhawan perishes after mishitting a slower ball from Hardik at the start of the over. Guyanese all-rounder Keemo Paul walks to the crease, and takes three deliveries to get off the mark. Pant then goes berserk, smashing two fours and a six, as Hardik takes a serious beating towards the end to finish with figures of 1/41.
SIX! Hardik Pandya has a look of disbelief on his face after that shot from Pant — which looked more a mishit than anything else. Short boundaries at the Wankhede mean even mishits can go for a six, and that’s what happened on this occasion. DC 149/4
FOUR! Back-to-back boundaries to Pant, this one hit in the opposite direction to the one in the previous one. DC 143/4
FOUR! Back-of-length from Hardik, and Pant pulls this towards the backward square-leg fence to collect another boundary! DC 139/4
Dhawan’s wicket puts Mumbai Indians in absolute driver’s seat. No one knows what role was assigned to him but it is too slow an innings. Such knocks pay off only when converted. Now its all on Pant to make a big mark.
Second strategic timeout taken after Dhawan’s dismissal. Meanwhile, West Indian Keemo Paul makes his way to the crease.
OUT! Dhawan’s vigil comes to an end, getting caught by Suryakumar Yadav at cow corner while looking for a big hit. Was a slower one from Hardik; Dhawan went for the pull, but couldn’t get the required distance. DC 131/4
Dhawan c Yadav b Hardik 43(36)
After 15 overs,Delhi Capitals 131/3 ( Shikhar Dhawan 43 , Rishabh Pant (W) 16)
Big over for Delhi Capitals, with new batsman Rishabh Pant suddenly getting a surge in his confidence as he smashes two fours and a six, the over costing MI 17 runs.
SIX! What a way to end the over, with Pant pulling this one towards the midwicket fence! DC 131/3
FOUR! Second boundary to Pant this over, this time getting a glove to the ball that is pitched well short of length, guiding it over the keeper’s head. DC 125/3
FOUR! First boundary to the new batsman, and this one’s sent flying towards fine leg, where the ball lands just short of the boundary cushion. DC 119/3
After 14 overs,Delhi Capitals 114/3 ( Shikhar Dhawan 41 , Rishabh Pant (W) 1)
Pant is off to a nervy start, getting a leading edge while looking to flick the ball towards the leg side, nearly offering mid off a catch. The keeper-batsman finally gets off the mark with a single off the fifth delivery. Single to Dhawan off the last delivery. Tidy over from Hardik, with just two coming off it.
Dhawan was on 40 off 32 balls when Ingram got out. He has to now really up his strike rate or else the pressure will mount on Rishabh Pant and others, and as mentioned earlier Bumrah will bowl two out of the last four overs.
Hardik Pandya returns to the attack.
After 13 overs,Delhi Capitals 112/3 ( Shikhar Dhawan 40 , Rishabh Pant (W) 0)
Cutting concedes 10 off his first over of the evening, conceding a boundary each to Ingram and Dhawan, before dismissing the former three short of what would’ve been his maiden IPL fifty. Rishabh Pant, another left-hander, walks to the crease after the South African’s exit.
OUT! Ingram falls three short of what would’ve been his maiden IPL fifty. Tried to go big towards cow-corner, but ended up mis-hitting the slower ball, with Hardik Pandya collecting the catch in the deep. DC 112/3
Ingram c Hardik b Cutting 47(32)
FOUR! Second boundary of the over, as Dhawan cuts this behind square on the off side. DC 111/2
FOUR! Ingram shuffles to his left, and laps a back-of-length slower ball from Cutting over fine-leg! DC 106/2
Ben Cutting brought into the attack for the first time.
After 12 overs,Delhi Capitals 102/2 ( Shikhar Dhawan 35 , Colin Ingram 42)
Seven off the over, including a boundary to Dhawan off the third delivery that is the result of a crisp drive wide of mid off. Delhi have now breached the 100-run barrier without losing any more wickets.
FOUR! Driven wide of mid off by Dhawan off Bumrah! Brings up the 100 for the visiting team. DC 100/2
Jasprit Bumrah returns to the attack, with MI skipper Rohit Sharma hoping his trump card delivers in terms of breaking the partnership.
After 11 overs,Delhi Capitals 95/2 ( Shikhar Dhawan 30 , Colin Ingram 40)
Forgettable over from Krunal, as Ingram smashes three boundaries off him while collecting a single off the last ball of the over to move to 40. The Capitals suddenly are looking good after the shaky start.
The third-wicket pair of Dhawan and Ingram are now in the zone, and with the pitch easy to bat on its really about how deep they can take the innings to. We very well know a wicket can bring two and then there are still three overs of Jasprit Bumrah to tackle.
FOUR! Third boundary of the over for Ingram, this one smashed past Rohit at extra cover, and Krunal might be taken off the attack after what is turning out to be a forgettable over. DC 94/2
FOUR! Ingram cuts this hard behind square on the off side. The sweeper puts in the dive, but fails to prevent the boundary. DC 90/2
FOUR! Ingram drills this one down the ground, the ball travelling dangerously close to Dhawan at the non-striker’s end. DC 86/2
After 10 overs,Delhi Capitals 82/2 ( Shikhar Dhawan 30 , Colin Ingram 27)
Dhawan collects a boundary off an outside edge at the start of McClenaghan’s third over, before nearly getting dismissed off the next delivery, the ball landing just short of Yuvi at midwicket after a flick by Dhawan. Fine save by Pollard at long on next ball to restrict Ingram to just a single. Dhawan then uppercuts a short ball over third man for a maximum. Over ends with two dots. 12 off the over, a good one for the batting team.
SIX! Dhawan uppercuts this short ball from McClenaghan! DC 82/2
Colin Ingram has been solid against short deliveries on both sides of the wicket so far. What has been impressive is his intent to look for a single after a boundary ball. He is returning to IPL after a long gap. It is too early to predict as conditions will test him as IPL goes deep, but he could be the kind of glue Delhi Capitals have missed in the middle-order over the years.
FOUR! Dhawan edges this while looking to cut a back-of-length ball from Mitch, guiding the ball towards the third man fence in the end. DC 74/2
Mitch McClenaghan returns with the ball in hand.
After 9 overs,Delhi Capitals 70/2 ( Shikhar Dhawan 19 , Colin Ingram 26)
Krunal’s off to a rough start after being brought into the attack in the ninth over, conceding a boundary to Ingram first up. Four singles collected off the remaining deliveries of the over. Fine partnership so far between the two left-handers, worth 41 at the end of the over, one that has the potential to lay the foundation for a big total.
FOUR! Half-tracker from Krunal, and Ingram pulls this towards the midwicket fence to collect his third four! DC 66/2
Krunal Pandya brought into the attack for the first time in the innings.
After 8 overs,Delhi Capitals 62/2 ( Shikhar Dhawan 17 , Colin Ingram 20)
Ingram dispatches a back-of-length delivery from Hardik outside off behind point to collect his second four. The South African then goes on to pull the ball into the stands beyond the cow-corner fence to collect his first maximum! 13 off the over!
SIX! Ingram pulls this over the cow corner fence to collect his first maximum of the evening! DC 61/2
FOUR! Short and wide from Hardik, and Ingram cuts this behind point to collect his second four, bringing up the fifty for the Delhi Capitals. DC 53/2
After 7 overs,Delhi Capitals 49/2 ( Shikhar Dhawan 16 , Colin Ingram 8)
The over starts off on a comic note, with the wrong batsman on strike, almost as if Dhawan forgot he collected a single off the last ball of the previous over. Dhawan guides the ball towards the wide long off boundary off the last delivery, with Yuvraj saving a couple of runs for his new team near the fence. Four off the over.
Rasikh Salam brought back into the attack.
Delhi Capitals cannot afford to lose another wicket for the next 6 to 7 overs. The onus is on Shikhar Dhawan, who has had a slow start, and Colin Ingram to build a foundation on a ground where dew usually becomes a factor in the second half. Anything less than 180 or 190 will be difficult to defend considering the depth in the batting line-up of Mumbai Indians.
After 6 overs,Delhi Capitals 45/2 ( Shikhar Dhawan 13 , Colin Ingram 7)
Dhawan starts off the over with a punch through the off side for a four, with a single coming off each of the next five deliveries. The first strategic timeout of this innings taken at the end of this over.
FOUR! Crashed through the off side by Dhawan! Was offered room by Pandya on the occasion. DC 40/2
After 5 overs,Delhi Capitals 36/2 ( Shikhar Dhawan 6 , Colin Ingram 5)
Tidy over from Bumrah, who’s brought into the attack for the first time in this innings, conceding just three singles off it.
After 4 overs,Delhi Capitals 33/2 ( Shikhar Dhawan 4 , Colin Ingram 4)
Mitchell McClenaghan has the knack of taking wickets and he gets a big one in Shreyas Iyer, however it was Pollard’s athleticism that must be credited for the wicket. Colin Ingram is a big name in T20 cricket, but yet display his prowess in the IPL. Can the new team turn the fortunes for him as well? The South African starts off his innings with a boundary.
Mumbai Indians are making it a habit to start the season with a rookie. Last year it was Mayank Markhande, who has since then played for India. This season its Rashik Salman, who touched 134kmph in his first over and bowled a peach of a delivery that got Shikhar Dhawan into trouble. He, however, has to sort out his overstepping problem. Two no balls in two overs is a cardinal sin in T20s.
Mitchell McClenaghan got Prithvi Shaw to play away from his body and had him caught behind. Its an area that Shaw needs to work on fast. He has been exposed regularly, most noticeably by Vinay Kumar in the domestic circuit.
McClenaghan has to thank Kieron Pollard for the wicket of Shreyas Iyer, who was middling the ball really well. Come to think of it, McClenaghan may not have been in the starting XI had Lasith Malinga been available. Mumbai Indians definitely in control even before Jasprit Bumrah is into attack.
FOUR! Colin Ingram is off the mark with crisp punch through point. Delightful timing, it was simply a gentle push to get it past point
OUT! Brilliantly caught by Kieron Pollard! Shreyas Iyer was again looking to loft another drive but the flying Pollard at extra cover grabs a smart catch. Iyer stands in disbelief for a second, before walking towards the dressing room.
Shreyas Iyer c Pollard b McClenaghan 16(10)
SIX! Gee, that’s some shot! Half-volley outside off and Iyer has once again loft this over the infield. This time it is much straighter and the timing on it is even better as the ball sails all the way over long off fence.
After 3 overs,Delhi Capitals 22/1 ( Shikhar Dhawan 3 , Shreyas Iyer (C) 10)
Iyer crunches a cut fiercely but is brilliantly stopped by Hardik at point. After a couple of dot balls, Iyer collects his first boundary by hitting it over the field. Salam has overstepped for the second time in as many overs and captain Rohit Sharma goes across to his bowler to perhaps settle him down. Iyer slices a boundary off the free-hit delivery. Delhi Capitals take 11 runs from Salam’s over.
FOUR! Full delivery outside off and Iyer is absolutely ready. He simply jams it out, opening the face of the bat to steer it wide of short third man
FOUR! Iyer hits this on the up. Stunning shot! Back of a good length width outside off and Iyer lifts it handsomely over the infield on the offside.
After 2 overs,Delhi Capitals 11/1 ( Shikhar Dhawan 2 , Shreyas Iyer (C) 1)
Captain Shreyas Iyer is in early in the second over itself. Shaw with minimal footwork poked at the delivery that was angled across after cracking a solid boundary off the previous ball. Successful over for MI.
OUT! McClenaghan pitches this up. Was slanted across on good length. Shaw flirts with it as he looks to play on the up and gets a genuine edge to De Kock. McClenaghan is off and running. Frenzy at Wankhede. MI have an early breakthrough.
FOUR! Short of a length on the body from Mitch and Shaw nails the pull through mid wicket for the first boundary off Delhi’s innings.
Mitchell McClenaghan will bowl from the other end
After 1 overs,Delhi Capitals 6/0 ( Prithvi Shaw 3 , Shikhar Dhawan 2)
Rasikh Salam received his MI cap from Zaheer Khan and the second player to play an IPL game from Jammu and Kashmir has a nervy start as he overstepps while bowling his first delivery, but he gets the ball to swing into Shaw, who gets off the mark. Dhawan cracks a pull straight down Hardik Pandya’s throat at deep midwicket (off a free hit). Few more singles in the over as the debutant concedes six runs off his first over.
Rasikh Salam Dar, from J&K, is making his IPL debut. He’s only the second player from the state to play in IPL. Want to know more about him? Find out here
Rasikh Salman Dar will open the bowling for Mumbai. Local boy Prithvi Shaw on the strike but he representing the Delhi Capitals. Shikhar Dhawan will be on the other end.
Considering Wankhede has been always good for the chasing team, it is no surprise that Mumbai Indians have opted to field first in their season opener. It remains to be seen how much Lasith Malinga will be missed. I am interested to see what Rasikh Salman has to offer. He is the second player from Jammu and Kashmir, after Parveez Rasool, to play in IPL. Also one has to see how Shikhar Dhawan fits into Delhi Capitals. Big season for Shreyas Iyer, their captain.
Yuvi set to debut for Mumbai Indians. Rasikh Salam Dar to make his IPL debut
