As India prepare for a crucial T20 World Cup 2026 Group 1 Super 8 clash against Zimbabwe at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, an unusual chemical solution, reportedly imported from the United States, is making headlines. The chemical has grabbed attention because it apparently helps prevent dew from forming on the field.

With Chennai temperatures rising sharply this week and temperatures hovering around 30 degrees Celsius, dew was expected to become a major factor in the IND vs ZIM evening game. Dew often makes the ball slippery for bowlers, which gives an advantage to the team batting in the second innings. But this time, the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) seems to have planned ahead to nullify the dew factor.

What is the US-imported special chemical?

“Dew Cure” is the name of the special chemical that has been imported from the United States, as per The Indian Express. The chemical is mixed with water and sprayed on the outfield to prevent dew from forming. It is reportedly used at Major League Baseball venues and is designed to prevent water droplets from settling on grass surfaces.

The report states that if the chemical is once applied, it ensures that moisture does not stay on the grass leaves. If any dew forms, it gets absorbed quickly, leaving the surface dry. According to the report, the groundstaff at Chepauk sprayed the solution on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon and plan to spray it again on match day to ensure maximum effect.

“Once Dew Cure is sprayed, it ensures that there is no moisture on the grass leaves. As soon as it gets wet, it will be absorbed and the grass leaves will turn dry,” The Indian Express quoted sources familiar with the process as saying.

India face do-or-die situation

It is a must-win game for hosts and defending champions India, who also need to win big against the West Indies on Sunday and hope for South Africa to win their remaining games.

During Wednesday’s long training session, Indian players reportedly stayed back to check the conditions under lights. The report claims that they were satisfied with the conditions and are not worried about dew affecting the game.

There are also discussions that “Dew Cure” might be used in the semi-finals and final if required. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is reportedly considering making its use mandatory in the 2026 Indian Premier League (IPL) starting next month, as dew has often influenced match results in the tournament.
