When Pakistan walked into the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, there was hope that this time things would be different. But once again, they find themselves on the edge of elimination. After crashing out in the league stages of the 2023 ODI World Cup and 2024 T20 World Cup, Pakistan are now hanging by a thread in this tournament too.
A narrow defeat to England in their last Super 8 game and a washout against New Zealand in their opener have pushed Pakistan to the brink of elimination. While the doors to the semi-finals are still open for Salman Agha and his Men in Green, they are slowly getting narrower. Pakistan’s destiny now depends on winning big against Sri Lanka and hope other results go their way.

Wasim Akram’s face shows pain
Meanwhile, an emotional moment was captured in the commentary box during the Pakistan vs England game. Legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram was on air when Harry Brook smashed a brilliant century to guide England to victory. As Brook completed his hundred and England chased down the target, cameras captured Akram’s reaction. He looked heartbroken.
Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja was seen standing next to him and he also looked upset with the defeat. Former England captain Nasser Hussain, on the other hand, continued with his commentary as England became the first team to qualify for the semifinals. A video of the incident is going viral on various social media platforms.

Now the Group 2 qualification scenario is very complicated. With England through and Sri Lanka out, the fight for the second semi-final place from Group 2 is between New Zealand and Pakistan. New Zealand’s big win over Sri Lanka has made them favourites. Pakistan need England to beat New Zealand in the next match. Even then, Pakistan must defeat Sri Lanka by a huge margin to improve their net run rate.
