Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar sat down with CNN-IBN for an interview where they discussed their conception of the ‘angry young man’ that they came up with.
“Now people write so much about the angry young man,” said Akhtar. “But to be honest we were not aware that these characters had a socio-political relevance. We were just writing interesting stories. We were true to the character.”
“The heroes of that era were very passive - ‘malik, mujhe maaf kardo’ kind of thing,” says Khan. “The good would win eventually. We thought, why is this so? The good should win right from the beginning.” Khan goes on to say that people were tired of the good hero.
