TV actor Pankhuri Awasthy opens up on harassment episode, will play rape survivor on screen
Pankhuri Awasthy admits that she was initially scared to object to sexual harassment in public places. A recent episode in Bengaluru changed that.
Pankhuri Awasthy has appeared in a few television shows like Razia Sultan and Suryaputra Karn. But what she really looks forwards to is her next project, Kya Kasoor Hai Amla Ka?. Unlike the other two, it is not a period drama.
In fact, in her next show, she will do away with any kind of superficial beautification as she plays a rape survivor. Hindustan Times reports that she consulted a psychologist and a psychiatrist to get into the psyche of a rape survivor. Much to her anguish, she discovered that most of the rape survivors are victims of marital rape and are married to the guy who raped them.
She has also recalled her own fears and encounters with sexual predators. India.com quotes her as saying, "When I was in Delhi, I used to travel to college by Metro and so many instances have happened with me. That time (in college), you’re so young and you don’t realise half of the things that are happening to you. If you think you can go out at night, you can’t do so without being scared."
However, a recent change in her reaction liberated her and made her more confident about dealing with such incidents. The same report quotes her as saying, "Earlier, I didn’t have courage to stand up against it. Now I do stand up. Recently, I was in Bengaluru with my friends and I was wearing a skirt. There was this guy who came and he had the courage to touch my thighs. I slapped him then and there itself. I can’t keep quiet now. I am proud of myself for doing that."
Kya Kasoor Hai Amla Ka? is a Hindi adaptation of the Turkish show Fatmagul. It is set in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh.
The 10 episode series will release in India with dubs in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Bengali alongside English.
