Badrinath Ki Dulhania trailer: Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt are a delight to watch

Girl meets boy, boy falls for girl, girl shows nakhra, rejects his interest, boy sticks around until girl succumbs and falls back in love with him.

Sounds like quite the 90s film plot, right? If you really think about it, this is the basic one-liner for Dharma Productions' next Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya.

It's a problematic one (especially because stalking and harrassment of women in a real problem in India), but with Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt playing the lead characters, you tend to forgot the rights and wrongs, and go along for the ride. Besides, there's a lot more to the trailer of Shashank Khaitan's film than the average boy-meets-girl premise.

Badrinath Ki Dulhania trailer Varun Dhawan Alia Bhatt are a delight to watch

Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt in Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya.

A sequel to the vastly popular Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya, Badri.. follows Varun and Alia's characters as they interact with one another, at first with annoyance and hate, and then with mutual love and friendship. The entire film revolves around them — how they meet, how long they take to fall in love. While on paper it seems exhausting to watch a whole film about two people, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan make it worth it.

This is a trope that the first film used as well. Coupled with the same cast (including supporting actors and Varun's two friends from the first film), a 70s song rehash (typical of Dharma to change 'Pinjare Wali Muniya to Badri ki Dulhaniya), lots of colour and a strong desi tone — there's a lot in common between the two films.

But watching Alia and Varun on screen is always a delight. While Varun nails the desi boy act (part naive, part thug, but full heart), Alia can sink into any character and make it her own. The trailer graphs how these two characters get closer. We are guessing there will be much conflict before a harmonious ending.

In the Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya trailer, the conflict seems to be that Alia is a smart, successful woman with global ambitions, while Varun is the complete opposite. Since the film was shot in places like Kota, Gwalior and also Singapore, we are guessing there is some truth to this conflict. The Dulhaniya series may have the same cast, tone and basic premise, but the two films have nothing in common in terms of story and characters.

Put Varun and Alia in any film, and their chemistry will shine.
