Reliance Communications, the country’s second-largest mobile phone company by customers, is close to signing a $1.5 billion outsourcing deal with a group of international telecom hardware manufacturers, including China’s ZTE and Huawei and Sweden’s Ericsson, according to a media report.
The move reflects a change in the business model of the Anil Ambani group company, which currently relies on a single company - Alcatel Lucent Managed Solutions - to handle its operations under a joint venture.
The annual contract between the two companies is scheduled to be renewed soon, the report said.
Practically every Indian mobile company outsources some portion of its operations to companies such as Ericsson, Nokia Siemens or Alcatel-Lucent.
It is unclear whether RCom will continue its contract with Lucent if it signs a deal with the new group of companies.
RCom had 141 million subscribers at the end of May.
