Shah Rukh Khan plays a 40-year-old man in Chennai Express. Yes, take your time and breathe a sigh of relief.
Now, coming to the trailer of Rohit Shetty’s much anticipated film Chennai Express, one can safely say that this one might break box office records at the cost of strengthening a bunch of stereotypes associated with south India.
For example, it seems to say that most ‘south Indian’ states are populated with big, dark men with moustaches floating like heroines’ pallus in the air, most Tamilians pronounce ‘don’ as ‘dun’ and all Tamilian goons won’t choose the convenience of any weapon less dramatic than a shiny sickle. However, if you can manage to look past the obvious cliches, you might just have a lot of fun. Just remind yourself that you’re watching the trailer of a Rohit Shetty film where logic or sensitivity come last in the list of priorities.
So, here are the reasons the trailer gives you to look forward to the film. First of all, it has Shah Rukh Khan is a very Main Hoon Na mode. After his lover boy debacle in Jab Tak Hai Jaan, he looks more like his charming self in this one. Also, there’s some va va voom action with SRK chopping up cars and goons with pick axes and spades. Then, there’s Deepika Padukone looking smoking hot. Ignore her unconvincing Tamil accent and you’ll be fine.
The trailer promises the film to be a laugh riot and has all the markers of a Rohit Shetty film. Cars getting tossed into the air, elaborate dance numbers, slapstick one-liners and a snarling villain.
This is Shetty’s first film with Khan, who has previously made films in the Golmaal series apart from Singham and Bol Bachchan. Most of these films are august members of the Rs 100 crore club and with Shah Rukh at the helm of things, who knows, Rohit Shetty might break his own record.
The film will release on 8 August.
