At the ongoing 2017 Geneva International Motor Show, Suzuki unveiled its all new Swift with a new look and updated internals. The much-loved hatchback gets a complete makeover and is now based on a new HEARTECT platform that not just makes it lighter, but rigid and nimble as well.
Even though this is a complete redesign, a quick glance and the design will remind you of the first or older models. While front end has been completely redesigned, its the side view that has better resemblance to the older Swift models. Still, the design looks fresh with a revised air dam, front and a rear bumpers, a slightly muscular look near the rear wheel arches and the unforgettable sweeping roofline.
The headlamps and tail lights get a redesign as well, both of which now wrap around the corners. Oddly though that waistline for the windows keeps creeping higher with the rear windows looking smaller than ever before. So much so that even the door handle has moved up on the C-pillar.
The new Swift is around 120kgs lighter than its predecessor and weighs as little as 840 kgs that’s a lot lighter than the outgoing Baleno model. But lighter does not mean smaller, as the boot space has gone up by 54 litres and is now 265 litres.
There are other goodies like six airbags, ESP, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control and a dual brake support system. But all of these have been announced for the international version. So buyers in India will have to wait to see what trickles down and is available for the model in India.
Coming the powertrain, the Suzuki Swift gets a 1.2-litre Dualjet petrol engine to deliver an additional 5 percent fuel economy over the previous model. Another option is a 1.0-litre Boosterjet direct-injection turbo engine for those who have performance in mind. What’s coming to India so far are the tuned versions of the 1.2-litre petrol and 1.3-litre diesel engine, which as always will offer better performance and fuel efficiency. Also expected is an AMT version.
Also showcased at the Suzuki stands at Geneva was a mild-hybrid version of the Swift. The new third-generation Suzuki Swift model is expected to be launched in India by Q1 2018.
