To beat the most balanced team in the competition, RPS had to find the right combination, That was provided by the inclusion of Washington Sundar, who could has bowled in the power plays, allowing Smith flexibility in the death overs. Jaydev Unadkat and Ben Stokes bowled critical last overs, to help RPS get over the line.

THAT’S IT! All over! Rising Puner Supergiant beat Mumbai Indians by 3 runs

What a last over from Jaydev Unadkat who took two big wickets in the final over. But the real hero was Ben Stokes who conceded just 19 runs off his four overs and took two wickets. RPS notch up their third win on the spin, while Mumbai Indians’ six-game winning run comes to an end. Steve Smith and co do the double over MI and spoil Sachin Tendulkar’s birthday bash. It was not the biggest score to defend but RPS did a great job in the end

Ben Stokes into his third over. Starts off with a loosener but Rohit Sharma fails to find the gap. The skipper then hands the strike to Pollard who returns the favour. Rohit Sharma then picks up the slower one from Stokes to drill it to the cover boundary. MI get the one boundary they need every over and stay on track. MI need 48 off 30 balls

A steady start, but with the team batting second traditional having an advantage, RPS will need more than steady. There is a school of thought that argues that slow and steady starters are actually detrimental to the nature of T20 cricket, although I think pacing an innings does have it’s place yet.

Imran Tahir bowls a vicious leg spinning delivery to start with that just beats Rohit Sharma’s outside edge. Rohit Sharma then goes for a big shot on the leg side and finds Rahane who drops the MI captain, allowing the ball to go for a boundary. Sharma makes Rahane regret by smashing Tahir for a big six on the next ball. Eleven runs off the over for MI

Karn Sharma drags one back to his stumps.  Ben Stokes proving his worth with the ball.  Pune have their neighbours in some amount of trouble. Pollard comes out at the fall of that wicket to a rousing reception from the Wankhede crowd.

Finally some action in a cluster. Rohit scoops for four, Karn gets dropped, then hits a six but then walks back to the hut. Pollard gets a rousing reception and amidst defeaning Chants of Pollard…Pollard he thumps one over mid wicket for four to open his boundary account. He then survives a run out chance as the fielder misses a direct hit. There is went support for RPS in the stands.

Ben Stokes whose first over was a wicket maiden comes back and strikes straight away. Karn Sharma inside-edges one onto his stumps. Kieron Pollard comes to the middle and punishes a short delivery from Stokes. He puts it away to the mid-wicket boundary. That’s followed by some misunderstanding between Pollard and Sharma ho eventually decide to go for a risky run. RPS fail to hit the stumps and Sharma survives.

Till then, 17 year old Washington Sundar held the fort well, picking up Parthiv Patel with the last ball of his spell. That’s twice now that he has bowled some quiet overs in the first half of the innings. Gives Smith more options at the back end.

Parthiv had slowed down a bit and the pressure got to him. Interesting that Karn Sharma has been promoted. Given that Tahir is bowling it could be a good move. Rohit has provided some momentum with a couple of couple of fours  and then boos ring around as Tahir’s vociferous LBW appeal is turned down by the umpire.

Shardul Thakur is back into the attack and Patel picked up a couple off the first ball. Thakur followed it up with a wide. All of a sudden, the crowd started chanting Sachin….Sachin…. but within minutes the mood changes as Buttler departs. This is a crucial breakthrough for RPS , Buttler was in good touch in last couple of games and can be devastating. Man in form Nitish Rana arrives.

Wicket Maiden! Ben Stokes came into the attack and he started off with a slower delivery that was played to the cover fielder by Buttler. On the second ball, Buttler tried to free his arm but didn’t make good enough connection. He was holed out at long on. Nitish Rana came into the middle and is almost dismissed as the outside edge drops just drop of the slip fielder. Big over for RPS.

The MI openers have shown an aggressive intent right from the word ho. Five boundaries in first three overs. RPS bowlers haven’t got their lengths right and just like MI pacers early on, they have been too short. Getting the lengths right on this track a very crucial.

The RPS bowlers then strays in line as Buttler flicks to the fine-leg boundary. It runs out to be a good over for MI as 11 runs come off it

Parthiv Patel and Jos Buttler open the innings for Mumbai Indians. RPS starts with young spinner Washington Sundar who does well to not give any loose deliveries to the MI batsmen who score just three runs off it

An ordinary score by Pune in the end. The ball looked to be gripping off the surface and shot-making was not entirely easy. Pune got a steady start but lacked the final push. Mumbai would fancy themselves in this one.

Wonder how Manoj Tiwary must be feeling about batting below Stokes and Dhoni. His IPL scores so far are 40*, 31, 27, and 17*. Here too he has started briskly, and fortunately. 

This may not be a 180 wicket, and there is no sign of dew either. lots of scuff marks on the pitch, which says it is a bit on the dry side, Losing the toss and batting second may not be such a bad thing for Smith.

A pretty good bowling performance from MI. Harbhajan was accurate and choked the scoring in the middle overs along with Bumrah. The track was on the slower side and the RPS batsmen had to earn their runs. The pitch might slower in the second half and it would be interesting to see whether dew plays a role. So far, it not been that humid. The super-soppers and ropes are out to minimise the effect of dew. The RPS spinners will play a crucial role here, especially Tahir. They will need to bowl a bit slower in the air.  Ben Stokes is already out practicing on the nearby wicket.

A stable base does not always make a tall building it seems. RPS make a score that is just about par on this ground, but they are still in the game, with the wicket not being straightforward to bat on. Balls dug into the pitch could be the way to go. Imran Tahir will be a factor, as well as Shardul Thakur’s (plays for Mumbai in Ranji) variations.

Rising Pune Supergiant have lost nine matches while batting first in IPL. They have won only one match while batting first in IPL. They won against Royal Challengers Bangalore this season at Bangalore while batting first.

Bumrah then attempts a yorker and misses. Tiwary puts the full toss in the same area of the field with similar effect. Bumrah responds well with a wide Yorker. The young Indian pacer then goes back to a slower delivery and traps Tiwary LBW. Washington Sundar who walks out two more runs off the last two deliveries to take the RPS total to 160 at the end of 20 overs

Mixed emotions inside the Wankhede as Bumrah cleans up Dhoni. You could sense the frustration with runs not flowing and Dhoni succumbed to that pressure. MI bowlers have done really well to choke the RPS batsmen. Onus on Manoj Tiwary to provide a very finish. He has been in good form so far in the tournament.

Mitchell Johnson continues this time from round the wicket and cleans up Ben Stokes. Gives no room the English all-rounder as he misses the ball completely. Manoj Tiwary who walks out almost finds the fielder as he plays a lofted cover drive that goes to the boundary. Johnson gets his wrong line on the third ball and Tiwary gets his second boundary, this time on the leg side. Eleven runs off the over, but a big wicket too

Bowling has been an issue for them, but it’s slowly getting better.

Mitchell Johnson comes back into the attack. Meanhwile Ben Stokes has arrived at the crease. Johnson starts off with two dot balls, before Dhoni pinches a single. The Australian then strays in line and Stokes flicks him for a boundary. The over ends with a couple of single as Dhoni retains strike

Harbhajan is all pumped up as he cleans up Smith. Clear signs that the pitch is slow. The ball stopped on Rahane during his dismissal and then here Smith was early into his pull only missing it completely. Rohit had said that Wankhede track will get slow as the tournament progresses.

Harbhajan finishes off a brilliant spell. Just four runs off his over but more importantly a massive wicket of Steve Smith off the last ball of his spell. Smith who was under pressure to get the score board ticking perishes. He fails to pick up the change in pace and has his off stump clipped

Smith dances down the track and slaps Karn Sharma down the field for a boundary off the very first delivery. The Australian skipper then takes a single to give Tripathi the strike who perishes trying to accelerate. MS Dhoni walks out having been promoted up the order. Later, Smith gets lucky as Harbhajan drops him at square leg. The Australian adds insult to injury as he smashes Karn Sharma for a boundary at mid-wicket. It all happened there. Good spell for Karn Sharma comes to an end

A huge roar echoes inside the stadium as Dhoni walks out to bat. Dhoni….Dhoni the chants go but it all turns silent in minutes as Harbhajan drops Steve Smith and he rubs salt with a four off next ball. what a change of emotions in matter of minutes.

Harbjhajan into his third over and he almost gets Smith with a off-spinning delivery that grips a bit. Smiath completely misses it as it goes all the way to Parthiv Patel. Once again the experienced bowler gives nothing for the batsmen and just four runs come off it.

Been a while since Rahane played sizeable knock. Looked to be his nite, but wasnt. BTW, he's clean shaven as is Rohit.Beards seem to be out!

The crowd comes to life as Karn draws first blood. It was all a one way traffic up till now. The ball seemed to stop on Rahane who checked his shot in the end. There was another anxious moment for RPS as Tripathi’s slog sweep flew just over the leaping fielder at deep mid wicket for a six. Tripathi will in all probability don the aggressor’s role now.

Karn Sharma bowls his third over. Good turn off the first two deliveries but plenty of top spin on the third delivery that was fired nice and straight gets the wicket of Rahane who top edges it straight to the bowler. Smith walks in the middle and takes a single. Tripathi remains unaffected by the wicket and smashes Karn Sharma over fine leg. Happening over

Matthew Hayden said at the start of the game that the wicket, which was also used in the last game here, looked a little tired. On such surfaces, spinners generally have a say, and it is spin that has taken the first wicket. Still, a base has been set. Whether Smith and co will be able to strike the ball cleanly from the word go will tell us more about the wicket

If you don’t buy the ticket, you don’t win the lottery. That was Tripathi’s approach against McClenaghan in this over. After a dot ball in the first delivery, Tripathi finds the off-side boundary. The next ball he gets lucky and the ball flies off the edge to third man. Later Rahane with another sweetly-ti,es pull shot gets four in the mid-wicket area. Big over for RPS. 14 runs come off it

This has been a steady start by Rahane and Tripathi but they would now be looking to up the ante with a solid foundation.  MI need a wicket now, their bowlers haven’t looked threatening so far. Looks like a very good batting wicket. Not much in it for the bowlers.

Well, well. The celebrations have started, the entire Wankhede is singing Happy birthday song for Sachin with the flash lights on. Super stuff.

That’s some dilemma for some of the fans out there. Let’s not forget, MSD is a universally-loved cricketer.

Harbhajan Singh into the attack with protection in the deep after the end of the PowerPlay. MI show why they are one of the best fielding units in the IPL saving three runs off two deliveries of this Harbhajan over. The Turbanator sticks to a stump-to-stump line, giving little room for the batsmen. Rahane tries to come down the track and hot for a six but fails to connect. No damage for the RPS batsmen

Karn Sharma bowls the final over the PowerPlay and Tripathi who seemed to be looking for gaps before the first ball, makes a telling connection to the first delivery that sails over mid-on for a six. Sharma came back well with just one of the next three deliveries. But Rahane once again shows his class. There is nothing wrong with the final delivery but Rahane makes great use of his wrists to flick a delivery from outside off stump to the mid-wicket boundary. Good PowerPlay for RPS. Risk-free cricket from the visitors so far.

A couple of bowling changes straightaway with Karn and Bumrah. The bowlers have not done badly so far as the run rate is just around about seven and half but they would like a wicket now.

If anyone can give a true tribute to Sachin Tendulkar it is and has to be Ajinkya Rahane.

Jasprit Bumrah into the attack for MI. RPS get two singles off the first two deliveries, but Rahane cuts it for a boundary off the third. It is one of many conventional shots the Indian vice-captain has played today and it has paid off handsomely for him so far. Bumrah almost gets revenge as Rahane tries to cut a delivery too close to his body. Bumrah finishes the over economically

After 4 overs,Rising Pune Supergiant 31/0 ( Ajinkya Rahane 17 , Rahul Tripathi 13)

Karn Sharma, the debutant into the attack in the PowerPlay. But the youngster seems to hold no fear as he tosses the first one in the air. Tripathi drives through the offside for a couple.  The second delivery is almost a carbon copy, and so is the end result. Rahane plays the other deliveries safely against the newcomer and it’s just six runs from the over.

Meanwhile, Sachin has just entered the MI dug out and there is a buzz among the crowd.

The MI bowlers haven’t got their lengths right so far. They have been either too short or too full. The full deliveries, especially, have been punished by Rahane and Tripathi. Young Rahul Tripathi has impressed in this tournament so far.

Johnson continued for Mumbai Indians but went round the wicket to Rahane who got a boundary through a beautiful punch off the front foot. It forced the Australian to change tactics and go over the wicket. No damage done, RPS off to a good start

The battle has well and truly begun. Rahane misses a pull but then a couple of balls later, he smashes one over cover for a six. Johnson didn’t get much movement in that over.

It’s the Rahane vs Johnson battle again. The two have had some intense battles in the past. Rahane came out on top on the last Australia tour. Will be interesting to see what approach he takes today and as I say, Johnson bangs one short , Rahane goes for the pull but misses. Just a short snippet of what we can witness.

Pace from the other end as for Mumbai Indians. Mitchell McClenaghan bowled left arm over. Tripathi up the Kiwi bowler in the first two deliveries before dancing down the track and hitting him for a boundary over point. MI felt to have got their man on the fourth ball as Pollard hits the stumps, but Rahane had made his ground. The RPS batsman added insult to injury with a clean straight drive for boundary

The atmosphere is building up at the Wankhede. The spectators are swaying to peppy Bollywood tracks.

Pune have gone in with an unchanged team, can’t remember the last time that happened. Usually there is so much chopping and changing, last year they used 23 players. Gives a sign that finally the right combination is coming into place. But defending a total will be a challenge at the Wankhede with the dew.

Mitchell Johnson right on the money firing at the RPS batsmen with a lot of pace. Rahane and Tripathi maneuver first and third balls for singles. The fourth ball is the big bouncer but it was too high and Rahane let it pass. The Indian vice-captain though makes Johnson pay for a wide delivery with a flat six over covers.

It’s a party atmosphere at the Wankhede. Chants of Sachin…Sachin have started echoing inside. MI will again be chasing at their fortress. A huge cheer goes up as the MI players walk out. MI have not only proved themselves while chasing but in the last match, they defended a meagre total against DD. Pune, however, have found their lost rhythm, somewhat. Promises to be an exciting contest.
