Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa surrendered at the Lokayukta Court this evening, following rejection of his bail plea earlier today by the court, and will remain in judicial custody till 22 October. His family was also present with him at the court. He was taken to Agrahara Central Jail shortly thereafter.
Before his arrest, Yeddyurappa had gone into hiding. Drama continued outside Yeddyurappa’s residence, after he was served an arrest warrant by the Karnataka Lokayukta court. The court was looking into a case of fraudulent land denotification issue. Yeddyurappa was served the warrant this morning after the court rejected his bail plea observing that Yeddyurappa might use his clout and influence to tamper with evidence against him and derail investigations.
After ordering the warrant, the court directed the Lokayukta Police to produce Yeddyurappa in court on Tuesday; he had excused himself from court today citing backache.
Lokayukta police reached Yeddyurappa’s residence later this afternoon but was not able to meet him. There were no clues of this whereabouts and all his secretaries had switched off their phones.
The Karnataka BJP issued a statement on Saturday saying that Yeddyurappa would move higher court against the Lokayukta court warrant.
Yeddyurappa can seek bail on Tuesday or he can challenge it before the high court.
Reacting to the development, Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi said that the case highlights BJP’s double standards against corruption.
