Rape by four is 'not practical, not possible': Mulayam Singh's latest shocker

Claiming that Uttar Pradesh is a victim of smear campaign, Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav on Tuesday made yet another controversial remark which undermined the serious law and order situation in the state. Mulayam said that while one person commits rape, four are named in the complaint even though rape by four persons is not ‘practically’ possible.

“One commits rape and then four more are named. Kabhi aisa ho sakta hai kya? Aisa practical hi nahin hai. (Can such a thing happen? It is impractical),” Mulayam said at a programme to distribute free e-rickshaws under a state government scheme in Lucknow on Tuesday.

Adding that when it comes to the number of rape incidents taking place across in the country, Uttar Pradesh features at the bottom of the list, Yadav said, “The population (of Uttar Pradesh) is 21 crore while that of Madhya Pradesh is 6 crore. There (in MP), the percentage of rape cases is 9.8 while in UP, it is 2. Moreover, in Rajasthan – also ruled by BJP – this percentage is 7. Don’t even ask about Delhi, I live there and know what happens. So, if there is one place with the lowest number of rapes, it is Uttar Pradesh.”

“Some are bent upon giving (UP) negative publicity. Remember, you tell a lie a hundred times and it becomes the truth. There are powers spreading canards about you. What happened in Badaun case? All the big leaders of the country went there. ‘Chalo Badaun’ was the refrain then. Finally what happened? CBI said there was no rape,” the Samajwadi party supremo added.

In April last year, Mulayam had opposed capital punishment for rape, saying, “Ladke, ladke hain. galti ho jati hai (boys will be boys. they commit mistakes).”

Then, a ddressing a rally in Moradabad, he had even blamed girls for rape saying that girls get friendly with girls and when they fight and have differences, they term it as rape.

“Ladkiyan pehle dosti karti hain. Ladke-ladki mein matbhed ho jata hai. Matbhed hone key baad usey rape ka naam dey deti hain. Ladko sey galti ho jati hai. Kya rape case mein phasi di jayegi? (First girls develop friendship with boys. They when differences occur, they level rape charges. Boys commit mistakes. Will they be hanged for rape),” he said.
