In an exclusive interview to CNN-IBN, Arun Jaitley stated, that he believes, that the current 2G note, sent by the finance minister Pranab Mukherjee, which hints at the involvement of P Chidambaram, is largely correct in terms of facts. He stated that the Congress had already charge-sheeted A Raja, who was an ally and therefore it appeared logically inconsistent that another legal precedent was being followed for a party member like Chidambaram.
When asked about the Prime Minister’s belief in Mr Chidambaram, Jaitley said, “If the Prime Minister has confidence in Chidu, then he must stand up and explain his actions. Why was the value changed to the 2001 value (of the 2G spectrum allotment)?” Mr Jaitley added that the Prime Minister needed to back his confidence with actions and not just words.
He also said that the BJP was not stating that some sort of criminality on part of Mr Chidambaram, but rather was arguing that a starting point for an investigation on this issue had to be taken by the Congress. “We are exasperated waiting for the truth to come out,” Mr Jaitley, said and defended the BJP saying that the party was not prejudging but was apprehensive that if Government and CBI could say that this doesn’t require investigation, then it sent out a very wrong signal.
Commenting on the political opportunity provided by the 2G scam, Jaitley said that the Government was collapsing under its own weight. When asked about BJP’s Prime-ministerial candidate, Jaitley brushed aside the question by stating they were a structured party and not a dynastic one like Congress and that they would soon be announcing their candidate.
