Illegal mining at UP’s Baghpat: SP govt’s big challenge

by Mar 13, 2012

Even as the recent killing of IPS officer Narendra Kumar in Madhya Pradesh allegedly by mining mafia shocked everyone, its neighbouring state of Uttar Pradesh is not free from the menace.

Challenges galore. PTI

The newly elected Samajwadi Party government to be sworn in on Friday under Akhilesh Yadav will have to deal with the mining mafia as soon as it assumes power to prevent a Madhya Pradesh-like incident and further loss to the exchequer.

In a shocking and daring video shot by IBN-7 in the state’s Baghpat district, the mining mafia openly wields weapons while excavations go on unperturbed without any fear of law.

“If there is any brandishing of any illegal weapons, strict actions will be taken,” said a police officer in Baghpat.

The illegal mining in Baghpat has made the area flood-prone and even threatens to change the course of river Yamuna.
