'Govt removing history from textbooks not just cartoons'

Prakash Ambedkar, grandson of Dr.Babasaheb Ambedkar, feels that the Thorat committee, which recommended the removal of 43 political cartoons, is being used by the government to delete all historical background.

While the government has said a committee examining NCERT textbook will only weed out politically and socially offensive cartoons,  Prakash Ambedkar, grandson of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, said that this committee is been used by the government for its own political agenda.

“The Thorat committee has been used by the government to delete all historical background,” Ambedkar told CNN IBN.

Ambedkar also said that by recommending the removal of the cartoons, a message was being sent that the present set of politicians were the one only responsible for the future of the country.

“This is sycophancy which has crept into the society and into the political system.It is kind of situation we have landed ourselves,” he added.

Speaking about the controvertial Ambedkar-Nehru cartoon from the NCERT textbook which cased an uproar in the Parliament in May, he said, “This cartoon was appreciated by Dr Ambedkar. When he had approved of it people professing Dr Ambedkar’s philosophy don’t have the right to say that this cartoon will hurt the community.”
