Vishal Bhardwaj's romantic war drama Rangoon opened to a rather lukewarm response this past Friday. With a dismal connection of Rs 6 crore on the opening day, it needs a rapid increasing rate of earnings at the box office in order to cover its costs.
Sajid Nadiadwala had produced the film under his home production, Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment and incurred a cost of Rs 60 crore in the process. However, Yahoo reports that he wisely sold it to Viacom 18 for Rs 67 crore and earned Rs 7 crore as a result. Now, the onus was on Viacom 18 to recover the Rs 67 crore they invested in the film, besides Rs 13 crore for print and marketing.
While Rangoon certainly received more traction than its box office rival Wedding Anniversary, it did not strike gold on its opening weekend. The second day collection was marginally ahead of the first as the film garnered Rs 6.07 crore on Saturday, as reported by Box Office Collection. As per early estimates, the Sunday collection also hangs around the same mark at Rs 6.73 crore.
Koimoi.com reports that on its second weekend, Rangoon could manage to earn only a meager amount of Rs 22 lakhs. Thus, its total collection now stands at Rs 22.30 crore. It performed poorly even in comparison to Subhash Kapoor's courtroom drama Jolly LLB 2 that released two weeks prior to Rangoon. With Shashank Khaitan's much-awaited romantic comedy Badrinath Ki Dulhania slated to release this Friday, Rangoon is expected to fold in major circuits.
The film has got mixed reviews from the critics but since it is made on quite a high budget of Rs 80 crore, in order to compensate for the three stars' hefty pays and the large-scale execution of the Bhardwaj's mission, it will be quite a task to redeem its costs, let alone be declared a box office success.
It was reported that Kareena Kapoor Khan and Sonam Kapoor charged less for their ambitious chick flick Veerey Di Wedding in order to limit its budget to a reasonable amount. Probably, Kareena's husband, ex-boyfriend and contemporary could have taken a cue to ensure the cost recovery of Rangoon.
