Market regulator Sebi has moved the Supreme Court asking for the detention of Sahara Chairman Subrata Roy for not complying with its orders to refund Rs 24,000 crore to Sahara’s investors, CNN IBN reported.
Sebi also demanded the attachment of passports of Roy and two other directors of the company, who were not identified. The Supreme Court will hear the Sebi plea after March.
Earlier, in February, the Supreme Court dismissed Sahara’s plea asking for more time to refund investors money, and pulled it up for not complying with its earlier order to return the money by the first week of February.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir, which had earlier extended the deadline to two companies of the group for refunding the money from November end to first week of February, refused to grant it more time.
Additionally, Sebi also asked hundreds of institutions including banks, other financial services firms and even government departments to be cautious in their business with these Sahara entities.
