The Bollywood biopic on the life of South Indian movie siren Silk Smitha, starring Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah, Tusshar Kapoor and Emraan Hashmi in lead roles is already grabbing eyeballs, even before its release.
Vidya Balan seems to have embraced her character in The Dirty Picture very closely. She looks tailor made for the role even in promotions and interviews. So, what would happen if she had denied the role?
Milan Luthria, the director in an interview with CNN-IBN said that initially Vidya was quite disgusted when he approached her with the idea, however, he promised her "none of my products look cheap and neither will you." Vidya agreed and thus began the story of recreating an era.
On Vidya's role in the film
'The Dirty Team' as they call themselves, said that getting Vidya's makeup and her hair right was quite a challenge. "We have made sure every aspect of her makeup is perfect, with techniques that wouldn't even allow her to eat or drink" said the director of the film.
Tusshar Kapoor, said that he was comfortable enacting scenes which were bold and dramatic only because of Vidya's goodness. "She is not just a good actor, but a great human being," he said. Emraan Hashmi echoed Tusshar's voice adding that "not too many actresses would take up such a role".
On Naseeruddin 'The superstar'
Naseeruddin plays the role of Suryakant, a legend of South Indian film during that time. He plays the role of a superstar who is almost larger than life.
Rajat Arora, the writer and lyricist of The Dirty Picture said Naseer was dressed up as a cowboy in the intro scene with lots of goons and horses in the background to recreate the drama.
The actors agree saying that Naseer is the 'supercoolest' part of the movie. 'His young attitude, doesn't make you feel you are working with a senior' said Tusshar.
Naseer although carries the most outrageous look in the movie, the team says he managed to look great.
On the movie, production, characters
Be it the ‘Twinkle twinkle main to little star ban gayi’ or 'Ooh la la la tu hai meri fantasy', the Vishal-Shekhar music is right there to make you dance. However, the music makers say "it is much more than 'nach-gana', it actually connects you to the movie."
Tusshar Kapoor who plays a the role of a budding writer in the movie says that it's his first autobiographical movie, and he is quite hopeful about it. He says though it is complete entertainment it brings in a lot of sensitivity.
Emran Hashmi who plays a volatile filmmaker in the movie says that audiences wanted something beyond what they see everyday and The Dirty picture lives up to that expectation. It has 'great characters combined with great emotions', he asserts.
Whether 'Naka Muka' gives you a kick or not, whether Vidya has actually justified the character and whether the scene of an egg turning into omelet on Vidya's belly is actually sizzling or plain gross can only be found once the movie releases on 2 December.
