US President Donald Trump has taken a personal jibe at his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, saying that his wife, Brigitte Macron, “treats him badly”.
Trump was criticising Nato for not backing the US in the Iran war when he said, “I call up France, Macron, whose wife treats him extremely badly. Still recovering from the right to the jaw.”

The US president was reportedly referring to an incident where Brigitte was caught on camera seemingly pushing Macron and hitting him in the face during a visit to Vietnam in 2025.
France later dismissed the reports of animosity between Macron and his wife as a “disinformation campaign”.
During a private lunch on Wednesday, Trump said he had personally requested French military assistance in the Iran war, but Paris denied any help.
“We didn’t need them, but I asked anyway. And I said, ‘Emmanuel, we’d love to have some help in the Gulf even though we’re setting records on knocking out bad people and knocking out ballistic missiles. We’d love to have some help. If you could, could you please send ships immediately?” the president said.
He went on to mimic what he described as Emmanuel Macron’s response in a French accent, saying: “‘No no no, we cannot do that, Donald. We can do that after the war is won.’”

He cited the exchange to cast doubt on the reliability of NATO in the event of major conflicts.
“So I learned about NATO. NATO won’t be there if we ever have the big one, you know what I mean by the big one," Trump said.
