Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited, a state-owned telecom corporation said on Saturday that it will offer 1 GB of free data to all smartphone users who have a BSNL connection but are not using the company's data services.
In a statement here, BSNL said it has "decided to give a special free offer for smartphone users to promote Digital India drive and to increase internet users in prepaid mobile services".
The offer would be available on a pan India basis, it added.
"On pan India basis BSNL offers 1 GB free data for the smartphone users who are not using BSNL GSM data services. The intention of this offer is to promote number of internet usersin BSNL network," it added.
Just recently BSNL offered a 2GB of 3G data per day for its subscribers along with unlimited calling for just Rs 339. The move by the state-run telecom operator was to counter the threat from Reliance Jio. The data and unlimited calls offer was available for just 90 days as Reliance Jio is offering 1GB of 4G data per day (rpt) per day and unlimited calling to all network for free till 31 March.
From 1 April onward, Reliance Jio customers opting for Jio Prime service will get unlimited data and calls till 31 March, 2018, for one time registration fee of Rs 99 and Rs 303 per month. BSNL customers under the new scheme will also get 25 minutes of free call to other network everyday and after that they will be charged 25 paisa for minute long phone call.
