What if you could customise your smartphone case just like your wallpaper or screensaver? With Google that could be possible, after news of the search giant exploring the customisable accessory segment was reported by Android Police .
The service, called Google Workshop, aims to let users personalise the cover of their Nexus phones (at the moment only the Nexus 5 is seen in images) in terms of colours, photos, templates and text. According to Android Police, this service will be powered by two main tools - MapMe and Moments.
MapMe is a location tracker, which will apparently offer suggestions about important landmarks of the user’s location such as their hometown or where they met someone special. The live wallpaper accompanying MapMe can show location-specific tweets or weather, with interactive touches included.
Moments will allow users to manipulate photos they’ve uploaded on Google+ by adding filters or text, and use them as templates for their Nexus covers.
Google could extend the service to its future Nexus smartphones and tablets, too. How it plans to deliver the customised covers and which regions will get this service is currently unknown, but chances are that Workshop will be similar to Motorola’s Moto Maker service.
Instead of accessories, Moto Maker lets users style the Moto X’s outer body at the time of purchase. The service is available only in the US and Germany.
